How to keep the right aspect ratio without AVS?
 

Hi folks,

I prefer to use Avisynth scripts when encoding movies, but sometimes I need to encode using TMPGEnc without using Avisynth (so using the avi as the source).

I have one big problem: keeping the good aspect ratio while resizing (and encoding).

Here's an example:
The dimensions of the movie (checked with Gspot and virtualdub) are 608x256 (2.38:1). The template I want to use is 544x480. So in TMPGEnc I open the movie, then the template. Then I click on the 'settings' button. On the 'video' tap the 'size' and 'aspect ratio' are locked and preset to '544x480' and '4:3 425 line (NTSC)'.

On the 'advance' tab I select '1:1 (VGA)' for the 'Source Aspect Ratio'. For the 'Video Arrange' I select 'Center (custom size)' and fill in '544x272' (according to the info Moviestack gives me).

Next I decode a minute from the movie (as a sample). I open the sample file with PowerDVD just to find out that my sample got a wrong aspect ratio: the height is way to small.

So I've messed around with the settings, checked the tmpgenc manual, but never found a logic sollution...

:?: So my question is: what do I need to fill in as the source aspect ratio to maintain the original aspect ratio after decoding?

You have to use "center (keep aspect ratio)" !

No.... still stretched too much :cry:

really annoying.... my source is 608x256 (2.38:1), my target 544:480.

In TMPGEnc we have the following settings that contain info about the aspect ratio:


ASPECT RATIO: (video tab)
* 1:1 (VGA)
* 4:3 (525 lines NTSC)
* 16:9 (525 lines NTSC)

SOURCE ASPECT RATIO: (advanced tab)
* 1:1 (VGA)
* 4:3 (525 lines NTSC)
* 16:9 (525 lines NTSC)
* 4:3 display
* 16:9 display
* 2.11:1 display

VIDEO ARRANGE METHOD: (advanced tab)
* Center
* Center (keep aspect ratio)
* Center (custom size)
* Full Screen
* Full Screen (keep aspect ratio)


I've couldn't find ANYWHERE information about what these settings exactly do. Using Avisynth scripts make it a lot easier, since the output is already given and the source arrange method always is 'center'.

You do not need to read these infos as... you can see directly was they do in tmpgenc before encoding ;-)

Open TMPGENC, load your source. Go to "Settings" qnd "Advanced", select "Clip frame" (double clic). Move yhe cursor to be on a revelant part of your movie (a frame that is light enought on the edges to see them). Select the button "Arrange Setting" and you'll can play with all the arrange setting methods delivered by tmpgenc and see directly what they do :-)
