I have a small query about bitrates... I know a lot of the divx/xvids I have are encoded at low bitrates, like say around 700-1000 kbps. You can check that using Gspot. With that being the case, what kind of changes should I make in my encodings for max/min bitrate? Should I leave it max at 2500 or can I drop it down to 1000?

The bitrate you see in GSpot is just the average bitrate, maximum is probably a lot higher than that. Besides, MPEG-4 needs less bitrate to produce the same quality than MPEG-1/2.

I recommend leaving the maximum at 2500kbps unless the movie is very long, in which case you could lower the maximum a little.

So first try using standard KVCD Parameters ... and if your Movie doesn't contain too much action scenes you can try to lower the max to 2000, also you could receive a CQ advantage by lowering the min Bitrate down to 64kbit ... but you have to check out if your Player supports this.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've been making my encodes with a min bitrate of 64 for a while now and my player has no problems. I'm mainly using CCE now because I'm making KDVDs, even though my sources are rarely from DVD. I've heard tmpgenc is better for low bitrate material (like mpeg-4) but I honestly can't see the difference but I love the speed advantages I get with CCE. I was just wondering what the lowest Q I could use for CCE is to maximize quality but not go overboard on file size. For example, in Tmpgenc there's a ceiling at CQ 90 where there is no point in going up to CQ 100. Likewise, in CCE is there no point in going down to Q 1?

TMpgenc is better for low bitrate TARGET, not SOURCE.

avisynth always provides an uncompressed picture to the encoder. The notion of "source bitrate" disapears completly after the frameserving.
