Using your script, I have been able to create an SVCD.
This plays perfectly using xine or mplayer.
However, when I play it on my standalone DVD player (Revoy) , there is no sound.
Any ideas?

Have you encoded your audio at 44100 Hz Some players have problems with 48 Khz.

The audio was recorded with 48Khz and I used mkxvcd.sh to encode it.
Does it have an option to encode it to 44.1?

Forget it! It was a connector problem.
