best capture settings for mjpeg?
ok these are the default settings for morgan mjpeg, anyone suggest good settings for the codec as I use this one to capture.
http://mysite.freeserve.com/KVCD/mjpeg.jpg now down to vdub, someone know the best settings to use for PAL capturin?? hope that makes some sense to someone   Thanx in advanced AndyB |
I used to capture with forced quality at 95-97 depending on the diskspace available. IIRC the compression took a big hit somewhere in the 97-98 region but the quality was very good. You can also use floats if your computer can handle it, which might not be the case as you don't seem to have a SSE2 capable system.

well I'm gonna have to ask ya to dumb that down for me lol

What comes to the VDub settings, I recommend the Doom9 capture guide. There's some points about different resolutions etc. A rule of thumb is, however, to capture at the highest possible resolution (704/720/768x576). The main thing is to capture both fields, meaning a resolution of n x 576.

I normally capture a weekly 2 hr show so I could do 352 x 576?
|
Humm, a tough question. If you encode that, the result will be softer than an encode from 704x576. Also encoding to a higher resolution than the source is generally not recommended. I suggest you try and capture something at 352x576 and 704x576 and compare the final, encoded results. A minute or so will do, you'll see if there's a too large difference quality-wise. 352x576 will save space like hell, that's for sure

if I could ask for ya to help regardin help for morgan mjpeg codec setting pwetty pwease :D

The answer's in my first post
Quality somewhere near 95-97 and you're just about done  Try if you can use "float" instead of "integer" with compression and decompression. If your machine's not fast enough, you'll get dropped frames. In that case, use "integer". |
right done that cheers, it also asks u for quality level when I select the codec what would u recommend there?

Or 768x576 at 1:1 so Moviestacker will give you correct aspectratios when loading and handling your captured streams. By choosing a high value like mentioned above you can decide afterwards what you wanna do. Making a 352x576, a 480x576 or a 352x288 KVCD encoding. |

@incredible: The resolution depends also on your capture card. If it doesn't do horizontal scaling, you're best off capturing at 768x576, cropping off overscan and then resizing. I've used FitCD to calculate the correct aspect ratio. My card (Hauppauge WinTV Theatre) uses a BT878 chip so it does horizontal scaling. I've unchecked the ITU compliance in FitCD so that the AR is correct that way. I rarely do any cropping but sometimes I have to take two garbage lines off the top and bottom. Actually this horizontal scaling thing is why I recommended the D9 capture guide. I can't explain the thing nearly as well as it is explained there so I'll much rather point to that direction  |

I do my captures using a nice "vintage" DC30 from Pinnacle. And as you mentioned I can't directly capture at 704 but 768x576. And thats why its not ITU-R BT compilant cause I cant digitze "square back resized to qudra pixels" at ITUs 704 resolution. So when I load my 768x576 into FitCD by this I also have to uncheck the ITU-R BT checkbox. The two lines on the top and the bottom which will be cropped when using FitCDs accurate cropping are for 100% correct aspect ratio as you mentioned but I prefer not to resize the vertical just for 2px AspRat accuracy cause of the quality loss when resizing ;-) Also when its interlaced 8O Did you also recognise that Moviestacker does exact the opposite when checking the ITU option by using 768 capures? Strange, thats why I prefer FitCD. |

right done a pal 1hr 16 min capture at 352x576 anyone know a good script for avisynth 2.5 it would be appreciated. :D

Watch in the "optimal scripts" Topic in the Thread "How funny" ... there you'll find some new experiences/scripts especially for capturing.
