Ok i've been makin a few kvcd's just without really understanding what i'm doing, but i've run across something i want to convert but i am not sure how to proceed.
I got a avi i want to convert to kvcd
its 640x352 and 25 fps and the audio is a ac3 so vdub doesnt want to extract the wav...since its not a wav.
What I've done so far is extracted the audio buy extracting the wav in vdub but saving it as a ac3 file, which i then converted to mp2
but i dunno if this is the best way to handle this thing.
I need to convert to a ntsc format so i'm not sure what to do about the framerate and therefore what template i should use on the video to get it to play properly in my dvd player.
i'm aiming to fit around 120 min's on a cd. Possibly 160.
so any recomendations would be helpful for best way to proceed.

That's the only way.

Do not touch the audio file and use ChangeFPS(23.976) in you script.
Or use "AssumeFPS" and you will have to change the length of your audio file using Besweet insteed of headache (it has presets for PAL->NTSC convert).

Take the 352*240 template, limit the max bitrate to 1500 and you will be abble to fit 160 min in a decent way.

The best way would be to convert the audio first as wav ....

"tone-pitch" what means that you rise up the frequency of the tone about 5% WITHOUT scaling the duration of the audio stream! GoldWave (if you got it) does contain such a filter and it doesn't perform slow at all and as I remember the quality was nice.
Safe the unscaled/tone-rised Wav. After this use besweet to perform the 25>23.796 fps SCALING incl. encoding to mp2.

Why this? Because in case of 25 to 23.976 the sound will slow down which is worse than scaling up from 23.976 to 25 fps! You will recognise this very well ... to me it even sounds horrible when women sound just a little deeper. And the procedure above compensates this problem.
