DVD2SVCD Header trick

My brothers DVD player (JVC XV-S40BK) only plays VCD (not SVCD). On DVD-r help site I've read that you can use a "header trick" in order to watch SVCD on this player.

If I use VCD or MPEG1 on the BBMpeg tab and SVCD on the misc tab of DVD2SVCD would that result in a VCD with "header trick" ?

(Normally I use sometimes just the oposite......-> SVCDor MPEG2 on BBMpeg tab and VCD on the misc tab but that doesn't work on this JVC player).....

Dialhot 11-09-2003 08:39 AM

Yes it is. I use it also for my standalone.

Paulus 11-10-2003 06:36 AM

Tried the first project (AVI->KVCD) with this "header trick" and something really, really strange happens......

The video in the muxed file .mpg is constantly increasing in playback speed every 3 seconds or so (when played with PowerDVD 5). Also (because of that ?) the audio is very much out of sync (right from the start).

The only thing I changed compared to my previous encode (of the same .avi) is that I put VCD on the BBMpeg tab (leaving |"SVCD" on the misc tab.)

Any ideas ?

PowerDVD can't play correctly our VBR MPEG1 files muxed in SVCD. I have the same problem here.

Paulus 11-10-2003 08:51 AM

Pffffffew.......thank god. I thought this would be my next "puzzle" to solve :) .

Will try it on the stand-alone this evening to check it.

Thankx

You try to play the CD image done by vcdeasy (or nero) or the mpeg ?

Because the mpeg can be played on zoomplayer, wmp, bsplayer...

Paulus 11-10-2003 10:17 AM

I've tried the .mpg on PowerDVD.

I also have BSplayer -> should it play correctly on BSplayer ?

Dialhot 11-10-2003 01:07 PM

I think so. I use zoomplayer myself but bsplayer is reputed to be as good as zplayer.

Paulus 11-10-2003 01:17 PM

Another report.....

The .mpg file plays OK on BS player (that is: the video runs smoothly...without the weird increase of video playback.).

However......D2S has made a NTSC file mpg with 29.97 FPS (BSPlayer shows this as info for the created .mpg file). This is strange because the avi source was in 23.976 (?). I'm getting more and more confused by these frame rate issues.... :(

The problem is that with BSplayer the audio is "way" out of synch (more than 2 full seconds)

I'm running a new encode as we speak and TMPGenc clearly shows 23,976 as input so this should be OK. Will check endresult on DVD stand-alone to be absolutely sure and let you know......

You simply missed the "3:2 pulldown while playback" option of tmpgenc :-)

In fact, DVD2SVCD used this option automatically. And the purpose is to have a 23.976 video but seen as 29.970 by the player. The reason is that only 29.970 is a valid framerate for a NTSC SVCD and some standalone can't play an other bitrate than this.

Nothing to see with framerate issue. It can be a problem of codec on your PC. Use Gspot and tell me what are the codec used for video and audio rendering.

I used once "Moonlight Odio Decoda" for instance, and the sound was always out of synch.

Open the settings of tmpgenc while it is encoding : you will clearly see that 3:2 pulldown during playback is used. Framerate is indicated as "23.976 (29.970 internally)".

Paulus 11-11-2003 03:40 AM

...Forgot about 3:2 pulldown  .................I'm feeling more and more stupid.

So the loss of audio synchro is caused by something else.

G-spot shows very littley info at all ("n.a." / not available) for the .mpg. After rendering G-spot shows "MainConcept audio codec" but I don't know that is worth something (directshow info ?).

Maybe it's sweethead/ HeadAC3he ?? Most of the time HeadAC3he crashes on my machine ("unable to read from source" or "less bytes than expected" errormessages). When I do it manually with HeadAC3he all is OK and I put the .mp2 in my working directory and do a crash recovery in D2S. This has worked on 2 or 3 encodes in the past.

Strange however is that the runtime of the .mp2 in WinAmp shows 2 seconds more (or less I can't remember exactly) than the playtime of the entire .mpg (including audio) in BSplayer. Maybe this means nothing (error caused by "rounding off" stream info ?).

Some more info: I used the same .mp2 file for a test with the same .avi source but completely as SVCD - MPEG2 (both on BBmpeg tab + misc tab "SVCD"). -> audio / video synchronicity was perfect (?). So the audio file must be OK, I guess........ 8O

Can you figure this out ?..........

Mainconcept audio codec is one of this "bad codec" I should never use.

Try to install Ligos suite (Ligos Video decoder / Ligos Audio decoder / Ligos Splitter) included in ACE MegaCodec Pack for instance, and all will be correct.

Paulus 11-11-2003 10:23 AM

Great......

I will download and install this evening and let you know the result.

Paulus 11-12-2003 04:01 AM

Just to let you know a "preliminary" report....... ( :-) ).

First I uninstalled Mainconcept because I don't need it anyway. Hope I did this OK because during the uninstall procedure a "strong suggestion" was made to not uninstall the "directshow registrations" (not sure exactly about the exact message.......). Anyway, I followed the suggestion to leave this "registration" intact.

After this I've installed the Ligos components of this Codec pack.....+ an Xvid component (because I was unable before to convert an Xvid with D2S...Now it works !). ACE asked me if I wanted to use an "aggresive codec remover" but I chose not to because I already uninstalled the Mainconcept encoder and it sounded "dangerous".

Anway, I've checked another .avi in G-spot to know which codec is used for the audio, which was my problem (will post screenshots if necessary).

I'm a bit puzzled again because now it reads "Fraunhofer" codec for the audio (this is after rendering in G-spot).

.........I'm running an encode as we speak (not the same .avi as before with the audio synchro problem though)....Got the errormessage from HeadAC3he again ("could not read from source file") so did it manually again (I suspect this problem has to do with the path I use for the source and targetdirectories - maybe "D:\WorkDirectorymovie\" is too long ?).

This evening I should be able to report if the audio/synchro problem is solved.

(Sorry abouth this long (and maybe boring) story.......I get too carried away sometimes........:-) )

Dialhot 11-12-2003 07:11 AM

Too late probably but... you don not have to reencode ! The MPEG you already had is in synch ! The synch problem appears during the playback !

Paulus 11-14-2003 04:44 AM

Hi Phil,

Yeah I know.........you were talking about solving playback issues. I thought you meant I had to change codec because of encoding issue......
anyway........

In PowerDVD the playback is now in synch but in BS player this KVCD with MPEGII file -> BS player crashed (two times). ... Guess I will use PowerDVD now for checking results........

One last thing .......I found the quality of this KVCD (MPEG2 stream muxed as VCD ("Header trick") a little bit (but noticeable) less than my normal SKVCD's. More visible blocks. Sharpness appeared better though. Is this possible (DVD player handles SVCD better than VCD ?) or is this "between my ears" ? :-)........Will try muxing as MPEG2 (in BBMPEG) to see if this is the case......

(by the way: this project is a avi conversion of a relatively long movie - Ronin, don't know exactly runtime - with quite a lot of action. Difficult to compare quality maybe....).

Dialhot 11-14-2003 05:16 AM

I have a problem also with my Thomson standalone : a MPEG1 KVCD muxed as SVCD is played with a lesser quality than the same KVCD muxed in VCD.

That's only problems of little lines appearing when there is a lot of moving, not a matter of blokcs like you, but it means than the this kind of things can happen. There aren't only in your mind :-)
