Hello:

I have been trying to capture some home digital videos, using a sony dvd camera connected to the computer via firewire. I have used use virtual dvd dub, and I get the following:
1.- I have been able to capture some video clips, and while I can see that the audio is also being capture, I do not hear any audio when playing the captured avi file. ( Usin WMP and Power dvd)
2.- After caspturing, as in step 1, I tried to capture another portion of the dvd tape, but virtuald dvd dub now asks for the Video for Windows capture driver, not recognizing the sony DV video driver, and after a funny error message, it goes back to the virtualdvd main screen. Again, this is intermittant, that is, sometimes it recognizes the sony driver, and sometimes it does not.

I just checked the virtual dub site, and they state that the only way to capture is via Video for Windows capture driver.
Has anyone properly -video and audio- via firewire and virtual dvd dub?
Are there any other capturing software worth trying?

Thanks

Totnho03

P.S.- Virtual dvd mod always asks for the Video for Windows capture driver, and I have not been able to capture with it at all.

Hey Totonho03, I did my very first DV capture yesterday, Canon ZR70MC, and unfortunatly I did not use virtual dvd dub, never heard of it, unless you meant virtual dub.

Anyway, my understanding is virtual dub does not capture from DV, which I initially tried to do and had problems, no video and audio was being captured but it said it was recording. Did a search and found out vdub doesnt do DV. I tried DVIO, which is free and easy to use, and I used Premiere 6.0. I also tried Windows Movie Maker, which is pretty easy. My trial 2 minute capture with WMM and DVIO were each 480 MB. With Premiere it was 399 MB for the same 2 minutes.

I captured the whole movie with Premiere, 59 minutes 56 seconds long, no dropped frames, via firewire and only used up 12.4 or 12.6 gigs, computer I captured on is off right now and cant check exact size.

I encoded with KSVCD 352x480, cq 80, audio 128, but came out a little too big, I believe it was 826 or 828MB. Obviously, I can't tell you how the quality is on tv till I try and put it on disc, which I am sure it wont fit, but it looked pretty good on computer. Hoped I helped you out a little!

Hi Tutankhamun:

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I do mean virtual dub, sorry for the additional word. In my case, I was able to capture with virtual dub, but only in 1 out of 10 tries, and after reading about it, I learned that it does not work with DV.
I will look into the software you are mentioning in your post, but will do that in about 30 days or so, and will post my results.
Thanks again
