Convert Movie and Put on KDVD with the Original Menus?

I would like to take the main movie. Compress it just a little bit (from 4.8GB to 4.3GB) then stick the vobs with the compressed movie back into the original structure and have it work with the original menus.

I am experienced with DVDShrink and IFOEdit, but am not sure how to get the MPEG2 that comes out of CQMatic back into vob form like the original movie since the menus and stuff rely on a certain vob/cell structure for the chapter points and stuff.

I guess I could just transcode with DVDshrink which is telling me the movie would be 89%, but if this is possible I should get better quality with KDVD.

Also what is the max bitrate I can use for KDVD 9.8Mbps?

Hi audi2honda,

For going down from 4.8 to 4.3, I would just do it with DVD Shrink.
It's a very small compression, and you won't notice the difference in quality.
If you were to do it with TMPEG for KDVD, it's a chore
Because you would have to encode to get your .m2v stream, and then mux your audio, sub-titles, captions, and all relevant streams.

I may give it a try just to compare. I only kept 1 audio stream so muxing shouldn't be to bad.

Since I'm going for max quality what is the max bitrate I can use for KDVD and still be DVD compliant? 9.8Mbps or do I need to subract some bitrate to account for audio?

Hi audi2honda,

If you are using the current MA script, there's really no need to go beyond 6,000Kbps. The high speed blurring of the script will dampen the sharp edges, and the created mpeg file will barely exhibit any visible macroblocks on high speed scenes. Even at 720x480

Sorry Kwag and with a respect of your MA script .... and I also use it a lot on hard to compress OneCD-Encodings

As he will get best results and so he uses a one Movie KDVD Backup I wouldn't use the MA on that high bitrate Safe-Backups (IMHO)...
Its better to go just a bit lower with CQ in comparison to the risk that static objects in foreground could be blurred when using MA. ??
Isn't it the purpose of MA to really push the limits so hard to compress movies fill fit on one cd?

There's an easy workout to see very easy without that deep manual calculations how much space the main reencoding hs to take:

Open your original in Shrink DVD .... there you can see all the sizes of subtitles, menues, AC3s, DTSs and shurely the movies, .... so you can see what components you will use and how much MBs they will take.

Add the MB sizes of all needed stuff except the main movie.

Calculate (4,37*1024) - (the size in MBs of all your audio&extra&menue&subs stuff minus the main movie)-(a little safe-overheat of maybe 100MB) = The size, the main movie has to take.
So you can use this value of space for prediction.

You have to know that 9.8MBps is the maxBitrate in the VBR settings, so use in case of KDVD for example 500min/5000max .... in case of the NOTCH matrix which provides a good compression factor you don't need to get above 5000kbit in case of max at VBR. I always get very good results and also be checket afterwards with "Bitrateviewer"'s Quntiationsfactor index etc.

So just put in the "other assets" field your Size of all other stuff beside the main movie and let it calculate your settings. But as I said don't go above 5000kbit as max VBR in case of KDVD cause this utility there calculates VBR values for standard matrix based DVD encodings!

BTW: If you wnat to perform a REmux job using Ifoedit or VOBedit .... USE THE TMPGEnc Template generator of ifoedit so your I Frames will be the same when encoding as new that preserves insync audio!
