cartoons - use lower resolution and still get good output?
 

ok so for my next project i was gonna a cartoon series onto kdvd's, but i got a few questions before i jump into it.

1. i have heard that when encoding cartoons it is ok to use a lower res and still get good output. so to save dvd's would i be better off in thyis case to even use KDVD 1/2 templates and get about 24 episodes per dvd??? remember though i would only want to use it if the quality remained as good as a dvd

2. ive noticed that when encoding audio to mp2 the size of the file is roughly the same for 1 hour or 2 hours movies... this could cause me trouble as i will be doing multiple short episodes, and may cause the audio files to be too large :?: anyone know ways around this of if im wrong :oops: ?

3. if i were to encode videos that were very small res into 720*480 with tmpgenc will the videos just like like i oversized them and be blocky, or will they retain quality???

I don't know where you saw that but you have serious trouble there !
We encode audio in Constant Bitrate. That means taht each second of audio take exactly the same disc space than did the previous one and will do the next one.The more the seconds, the more the space occupied.
A 2-hour movie take exactly the double of space of a 1h movie :!:

Normaly you should never magnify the video. Always reduce the size. Because when you magnify, you do also enlarge the defaults !

I burned a whole anime serie consisting of 12 episodes + teaser + soundtrack to DVD.
Source was 640x480 (ergo 4:3) ~800kbit/s DivX + 128kbit/s MP3, as many DVD-ripped animes are.

I encoded the video in SVCD mode (480x480, setting display flags to 4:3), just lowering the average bitrate (2-passed) to 1800kbit/s.
Audio was converted to 224kbit/s 48KHz.
So except the audio frequency it's pretty much a svcd.

Then I followed a WinOnCD 6 DVD-Edition guide I found on doom9, since WinOnCD can be very tolerant when authoring DVDs.
The result was a non-standard DVD with 480x480 video which plays fine on all (2 :) ) DVD-Players I've tested so far. Yeah, of course they have to be svcd capable.
