KVCD: Upping the minimum bitrate?

I've read of several people resolving skipping issues in their DVD players by upping their min bitrate from around 300 to 600.

My question is exactly what effect does this have on quality and filesize?

Reason i ask is I have a movie that plays great at 352x480 KVCD muxed and burned as SVCD, but when I tried upping the res to 528x480 I notice an occasional skip of the video during particular scenes.

Not always high action scenes either. But one thing that seems to cause it is if there's a close shot of someone walking across the screen with a stationary background they will suddenly teleport themselves a few feet, if that makes sense. It's always in the same places in the film.

I've tried slower burning speeds, different media...etc

The added quality of the 528x480 template is impressive, but i would really like to get to the bottom of this occasional skipping of the video. The sounds never glitches. :?

Thanks

Hi VORTECH,

What you are describing, looks to me like a bitrate "peak".
Try encoding with a lower MAX bitrate. Lower your MAX, maybe 200Kbps, and see if it cures the problem.

Kwag,

Thanks as always. I am going to test this out now :D

Let us know :!:
You might have to keep lowering your MAX in small steps (~50Kbps) down to the point where you don't see that behaviour. Hope it's not too low

It's encoding now. ETA of 3 hrs. I dropped it down 200 and if that fixes it I will slowly bring it back up 50 at a time. :D

8O Why didn't you just encode that section with different MAX bitrates, and burn to CD-RW
That way, you don't have to wait that long to figure out what MAX you must use :!:

My SAMSUNG M301 doesn't seem to like CDRW's so I'm hoping it I'll get lucky on the first try and the end result will be exactly what i was looking for.

Vortech ....

If CD-R or CD-RW ....
Thats not what Kwag wanted to point out!

Only do test encodings on that scene where do you see the problem by just using the "source range" option in Tmpgenc.
- Do several encodings on that scene using a lowering of the max Bitrate for each stream by maybe 50kbit at "max".

Give all those encodings their senseful names like : testencoding_max2500.m1v .... testencoding_max2450.m1v .... and so on.

Use these streams later to author a VCDeasy generated SVCD cotaining entry points for each encoded stream.

Ahhh, now I understand

I did drop it 200 and played it back on my Player last night. Still the same problem, and the quality was obviously much worse.

Not sure why it plays OK the 352x480 template and not the 528x480.

Maybe I need to up my min bit rate, or go buy some better media.......

Hi, VORTECH,
taking in mind that overall 352x and 480x are more compatible resolutions, so to say, do you have the same problems playing the files 528x on PC? And how is the compatibility of your DVD standalone? Did you try different samples from this site? Your DVD player doesn't seem to like CDRW, well, it might not like 528x as well...

kwag 12-12-2003 10:58 AM

Hey VORTECH,

Did you try the alternate resolution 544x480 :?:

Some great info guys I really appreciate all your help.

Abond,

You know I downloaded Kwags test CD, burned it using Nero as stated and I could never even get it to play on my standalone player :?: Though it played fine on my PC using Power DVD. It wouldn't even recoginize it. Tried this several time.....so to be honest I don't know exactly what the player is capable of.

The DVD compatibility section states only 352x240 KVCD, but I know it does 352x480 KVCD and (S)KVCD perfect, and 528x480 KVCD and (S)KVCD good, just not "perfect". Long as I mux and burn as SVCD.

My PC seems to play 528x480 fine

I'm hoping I just need just a bit more tweaking to find my players "sweet" spot.

Kwag,

You know I didn't. I thought of a couple things to try. Taking the 352x480 template and upping it to 480x480 was one, and now i'll add 544x480 to that list.

Thanks all!

Hi,,

i don't know if it will help, but last night I had problems with a 704x576 KVCD, until I multiplex with a 230 kb vbv buffer size... This size is the SVCD size, and in my case, it helped me getting rid off this skips.

Salu2
Fabrice

VORTECH 12-13-2003 10:24 PM

Fabrice,

I will keep that in mind on my next test. Thanks! :)

You could also try to set the VBV buffer size in tmpgenc to
"0". This way the buffer size is detected automatically.
