KVCD: Higher RESolution or Higher CQ?
 

Greetings,

I have found that my DVD player responds best to the following two formats:

352x480 (S)KVCD and 528x480 (S)KVCD both muxed and burned as SVCD

My question is at what CQ is 528x480 going to look worse then 352x480?

I realize there are probabily alot of factors to decide here but I was hoping there was at least a general rule of thumb?

Encode a same clip with higher CQ and lower res, and higher rs and lower CQ, then check in your tv which looks better!
I think people here suggest higher CQ!

I always prefer the highest resolution with a CQ of 60 or above. If I can't get the CQ above 60 I will lower the resolution...

Yep, your eyes will tell you what looks best.

But in all my experiences I ended up with a conclusion that Higher Resolutions with some less CQ do look better than small res and high CQ.

Because at a res of 352x240 the whole image will be sized up 4 times!
Threrefore the artefacts also will be double-double sized!

Example a 528x480 stream at CQ 62 will look better than a 352x240 at CQ 74. Besides this the higher res will end up in a sharper image.

So if you do a comparison do the following: Do a encode at small res and one on a high res. After Encoding load both of them into Vdub (real quality preview! For me the best output to see the real state of the source quality) and resize both to 720x480 using BicubicPrecise in Vdubs Filtersettings. Now on the right window you can see how both will result when resized to the almost look on Tv. And then you decide.

IMO the answer of your question is CQ60. And I have a question. Do you want to say that your DVD player doesn't support 480x480?

You know it does support that, I just forgot to throw that in. It could be a good compromise between the two.
