mosquito noise effect?
Hi Kwag,
After making a backup of "The Time Machine" using KVCD Beta template of CQ_VBR 704X480, I noticed a strange edging around anything moving. I compared this to an SVCD backup made with DVD2SVCD. The SVCD backup showed no "Mosquito Effect" as I call it. So, I viewed 2 other KVCD 704X480 backups and they had the same problem. It's even more pronounced using KVCD 352X480. Can this effect be reduced or eliminated and how? :?: This seems to happen only when there is medium to fast movement during a scene, otherwise the picture quality is near perfect. |

First of all, check that you have encoded with the "PLUS" templates. They were tweaked at the last hour, before naming them "PLUS". If you have a very high action scene, you can increase the MAX bit rate, to compensate for action. But your file size will also increase, and maybe your DVD player won't play a very high bit rate. You'll have to try encoding several clips to see how high you can go. -kwag |
It Works!!!
Thanks Kwag,
I made several small test clips, each time increasing the max bitrate by 100 from 2300 to 2600. It seems my player (JVC XV-S60BK) can handle even higher bitrates, but the file size rapidly increases. The mosquito effect has all but disappeared and fast action scenes are much cleaner. I am so impressed with this KVCD 704X480 Plus templete that I am going to upgrade my CD-RW burner (LiteOn 24/10/40) to burn 90 min and/or 99 min CD-R's. My DVD player seems to handle 99 min CD-R's with no problem, but my old CD burner (Sony CD-RW CRX140E) may not. Again thanks for your advice. |
If you want to save some money and don't care about slower speeds, the Mitsumi 4804TE (and possibly other models in that line) support 99min CDs.

Ignore me. I didn't realize CD-R drives were so dirt cheap now. Rush over to www.newegg.com and buy the LiteOn drive for $66 (free shipping). Something crazy like 48x write speed, burn proof, and second only to much more expensive Plextor drives.

LiteOn
Thanks Daagar, ordered it from www.newegg.com today.

i encoded a movie with the kvcd plus 704x480 temp and left all default settings and i was very impressed with the quailty. i then reencoded that same movie at 7.5 CQ_VBR and although most of the movie is great im getting this so called mosquito effect quite frequently in all parts of the movie not only on high action scenes. is this because of the 7.5 CQ_VBR?

Hi |3|aderunn3r,
7.5 is too low!. You'll fit more data on a CD, but the effect will be just what you've experienced. -kwag |
