kvcd audio/video sync problem?

Hi all,

Happy New Year to you :D

I have tried backing up Pirates, but have an audio/video sync problem.

I have done this the same way as any other project that I have done and cannot understand it.

I end up with an audio file which is 'ahead' of the video by about 7 seconds. I do not know the exact time difference as the .AC3 file shows no delay :? Is there an easy way to find the difference :?:

I have ripped with SmartRipper, DVD Decrypter and reripped with SmartRipper. I have demuxed the audio stream to AC3 as source and decoded it to WAV as source. Still the same problem

My source is the UK PAL version. Has anybody else had a sync problem with this :?:

As usual, any help would be much appreciated :)

Did you do such long movie before (POTC is near 2h20, no ?) ?

mistermickster 01-08-2004 11:15 AM

Hi Phil,

Yes, I have done LOTR - Two Towers, with no problems :?

Dialhot 01-08-2004 11:18 AM

Okay. When you play the DVD, is there a short dumb video that plays (generally the logo of the producer) before the film starts ?

Is the delay on the standalone ? In the generated mpeg ?
Is it present in the original ac3 ? in the wav ? in the encoded mp2 ?

Not quite sure what you mean here Phil :?

I have only tried it on the PC under MediaPlayer and PowerDVD.

How do I run the AC3 or WAV file against an encoded video :?:

One thing I did notice, is that the video encoded to 2hr 17min 26 sec
whilst the audio shows up in HeadAC3he as 2hr 17min 18.880 sec

Almost all movies start with the logo of the company that made the film (warner, universal...). It's generally included in the same vob than the movie itself but sometimes it's a separate vob, containing only this short clip. And that can screw the ripper. I wonder if your problem would come from there.

Use a clock to see in the video how much time you have from the start till the first spoken sentence. Then listen the ac3 or the wav and see if there is the same time.

Okay ! The problem is really there.

Is the ac3 source that is given for 2h17'18 in headeache or the output mp2 ?

Both :!:

My idea of silent producer logo in the beguinign of the video seems to be the explanation of all of this.

If the delay is constant, the best to do is to convert to audio as usual but add a delay equal to 2h17'26s - 2h17'18.88 sec = 7.12 sec.

Hi mistermickster:
I know, it's gonna be of little help. I had this same problem once, with Monsters Inc. I solved it... meking several tests: encoded a small sample (first minute) at low quality (is faster) to mp2 with headac3, at several delay times, and multiplexed with the first minute of the film. Look, listen, still too short... encode again, with another delay. It took 6-7 tests, but now is in perfect sync (I chose a scene where a door was closed, and this way I could perfectly syncronize audio and video).
Yes, too manual method, but I got good results. Try it to fine adjust after trying Dialhot's suggestion.

Hi guys,
Phil, should this be happening because of the producer logo, couldn't mistermickster just remove that cell (the one with the logo) from the movie with IfoEdit after it's been ripped?
I really don't know how it's done, though...
It wouldn't be a 100% exact backup but maybe then at least it would be watchable

For sure. But IfoEdit is one of the most complicated tool I ever see. Complete but hard !

Gracias mucho amigo.

I got it down to 6.2 seconds but it's still not quite right. Will try your method. :)

Can't believe that I didn't think of that myself and actually re-encoded the whole audio several times. :banghead:

Or you could use BBMpeg to mux your m1v and mp2 file, because you can set a delay time for the video or the audio, thats what I do when I have audio sync problems, again it will be a little trial and error, before you hit it on the spot.

You could also try extracting .wav file with Mediator. This solved the audio sync problems with Kate & Leopold

dvlboy 01-16-2004 07:10 AM

Hmmmm....Pirates of the Caribbean (Disney), Monsters Inc. (Disney), and Kate & Leopold (Miramax/Disney) all having the same audio sync issue?

Sounds like something to watch out for when working with Disney titles.

mistermickster 01-16-2004 09:23 AM

Yes, but I've already done Toy Story 2 (Disney), The Tigger Movie (Disney), Beauty & The Beast 2 (Disney) and Cinderella 2 (Disney). All with no sync issues

Hi everyone
you can use media player classic.
you can load the video and the audio separately and set a delay to the audio. instead of converting samples, just play with the audio delay settings.

it can be found here:
