Error Message when i try to open AVI file

i have a AVI file which i believe is MPEG-4 format but im not to sure..., Anyway when i goto open the movie it says " Couldn't Locate" decompressor for format 'MP43' ( Microsoft High Speed MPEG-4 V3 ) " and then it carries on with some stuff about how it requires a VFW compatiable codec to decompress video, so anyway what does this mean??, and how can i change this, is there a fix for this error???

Hydeus 01-10-2004 06:27 PM

It is diferend FourCC od DivX3.11, so try to change it FourCC to DIV3 with hexedit or FourCC changer (it is in XVID instal package).
Furthermore, if still nothing, try to change it to XVID.

bd987321 01-10-2004 06:51 PM

what do you mean how do i change it

Hydeus 01-10-2004 06:56 PM

You're lucky ;) I was on my way to bed :)
Install XVID codec pack -> new folder will appear in star menu programs -> click on AviC (FourCC Changer) -> open youre file -> change FourCC Description Code form MP43 to DIV3. You may also try change FourCC used Codec but this should bring no change.

Man ! Your avi is encoded in MP43 codec ! It is not by changing the 4CC number that windows will miracoulusly find a relevant codec on your PC for that :!:

Go to www.codec-download.com and DL the codec you need.

bd987321 01-10-2004 08:03 PM

lol i never knew that this codec was so uncommon, well you guys for your help

bd987321 01-10-2004 08:50 PM

When i change it, it comes up with the message "Couldn''t Locate Decompressor for format " how do i fix this??? ( i put Under the FOurCC description code DIV3 and under the other one nothing is this how it is ment to go?? )

Dialhot 01-10-2004 08:51 PM

Shall I use my invisibility for good or bad ? hum...

bd987321 01-11-2004 12:07 AM

Sorry i tried your way after and it worked, thanks

Hydeus 01-11-2004 06:06 AM

I did not count on miracle ;) but DivX 3.11 decoder should work with this format, they are almos equivalent (one is hack of another). This was only the one way of many, and i dont like to instal 100's of codec on my machine. I assumed that most of the computer on the world (most, but not mine ;) ) have this codec instaled (or DivX5) so it should work -> ergo: it worked in my MP43 files.

With probably a lot of glitches that you didn't notice but would'nt exist with real codec installed.

There is aleady hundreds of useless files installed by XP on your PC, so why refuse to install a usefull one ?

rds_correia 01-11-2004 09:08 AM

@Dialhot,
BTW what YV12 codec have you got installed right now?
ATI, XviD, Divx?
I think I'm still having problems with Nic's XviD :(
Cheers

Let me check immediatly for you :

XVID MPEG4 Video Decoder
Mar 30 2003 13:03:06

No precision about the version (nic's or not) but it's the one included in ACE codec pack 5.93.

No problem with this one. Never have any.

Hydeus 01-11-2004 10:22 AM

XP you say :? Don't have idea what crap is installed on it - I live with 2k  . I've se no diference betwen Divx 3.11 dec and DivX dec working on the same MP43 file (beside green movies), but again this is subjective. But let's no argue about it anymore.

rds_correia 01-11-2004 10:23 AM

There's something strange when I play some m2v on wmp/zoomp.
The whole picture while visible is very dark and with a touch of purple.
And I'm thinking if it hasn't something to do with my YV12 codec which is of course nic's...
Could it be a problem with my vga/drivers?
Using powerdvd I never seen these problems, but then I never used my wmp so I don't know if I have this problem for long or only for a couple of days...
Thanks anyway.
C ya

What is the mpeg2 codec used under zoomplayer ?
PowerDVD use its own codec, that is probably why you see a difference.

When you have a problem with the YV12 codec, it's during encoding. So whatever the tool you use to read the video, the default are there.
For instance, when I used ATI YV12, all my video where encoding too bright ! I had to use a "level" line in my script to darken the source and obtain a correct picture after encoding :-(

rds_correia 01-11-2004 10:50 AM

Hmm,
I see your point.
I'm going to check what codec is being used by zoomp for mpeg2.
Thanks man.
