Can you use 'file mode' rather than 'movie mode' in ripping?
 

I usually use DVD Decrypter or sometimes SmartRipper to rip my DVD's for conversion to KVCD. But I have a DVD that won't play properly because of some scratches I think, and I can't get it to finish the ripping process, it always hangs up at the same spot. But when I tried file mode and manually selected the files to rip, it was successful in going entirely through. I just wasn't sure which of the files to select (just the VOB's and the IFO?) . All the guides I've looked at for DVD to KVCD say to make sure to use DVD Decrypter in movie mode. Is there a way to use file mode and then proceed through the normal processes of Moviestacker, TMPGEnc, etc?

Speaking for myself I only rip the VTS_01_x.VOB and the IFO file that comes with it.
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I never ran into problems about that.
I think I even haven't ripped a DVD in movie mode yet...
So I guess you'll be okay.

I guess I shouldn't have said "movie" mode, but IFO mode. In DVD Decrypter the default mode is IFO. So you have used File mode successfully in DVD to KVCD conversion?

No problems until now.
I just extract the vts and ifo files that really belong to the movie and everything works great, but then again I haven't tested it with many movies.
Until now I have backed up 5-10 movies because I've been making lots of experiences and recently I moved to KDVD instead of KVCD.

I found a problem in some DVD wich contain a tv serie episodes.
I used smartripper with files options , but when I made the converion I found that the correct sequence of the movie was complitely mixed up.
I found that in a vob was some part of an episode and the remaining parts were in another vob files.
I did again the ripping with smartripper using the movie options.
And everyhing went ok!
The only problem was that I had to extract each episod one by one in movie mode!

You have to understand the difference between the movie mode and the fiel mode.

File mode copy the data as if you were copying whatever kind of files on your PC. It does not look into the files to see what is inside.

The IFO (or movie) mode use the PGC (program group cell) to know what it has to copy.

99% of the time, the PGC follow the vobs in a linear way. But sometimes (when you have angles for instance) the PGC do not follow the vobs. And in this case the problem you had occurs Logan.

I had the same thing once on a DVD with cartoons. The main and end titles that is normally read at the begining and end of each episode was in fact only ONCE on the DVD. There were in the cells 1 and 2. The cartoons episode were in 3, 4, 5, 6...

So the PGC was : 1,3,2,1,4,2,1,5,2...

This is really tricky sometimes :-)
And I do not even mention tricks used by producer to make the copy more difficult (like "Finding Nemo" where there are false cells declared in the PGC).

Weeks ago I wanted to reencode separately the Streams from the bonus material of DVD4 of the Box set of Indiana Jones and by this to find the right subtitles. It was really a matter of confusing cells etc. Very strange mastering of that DVD ... as the regular subtitle extract/adding did not work - nothing I tried everything ... really complicated. There where like "hidden" cells within a cell which is total unlogical *lol

A nice friend was really ShrinkDVD where you can Reauthor DVDs (no compression) and put the Vob/cell Streams nice separated onto your HD as unique DVD IFO/VOBs where everything could be handled in an easy way. And it was fast.

That function is a little hidden treasure of ShrinkDVD when trying to separate cells if the Ripper can't handle them right.

The only problem is that the "tricky false cells" I mentioned for "Finding Nemo" (US Z1 version) is intented to... screw up all the recoder like DVDShrink !
(they detect a movie that is 20 min long the the reality !)

In other words : there is not a universal solution.

Since my last experience with those "mixed" DVD I do a Movie type extraction with smartripper
