Ripping widescreen or standard?
 

I've run into this problem.

On certain backups I can choose between widescreen and standard format on the DVD, in the ripping process how does one tell which is which? I prefer the standard format since I don't have a widesreen tv.

Has anyone run into this and found a solution?

Can you point to a screen or something? Give us JPG.
16:9 is widescreen and 3:2is regular so is 4:3
if it gives you choices pick 4:3

I should rephrase:

When I play the DVD I will sometimes have the option of choosing widescreen or standard 4:3 When I go to make the back-up, I would like to rip the 4:3 version on the DVD. I use DVD decrypter and am uncertain which vob files I should choose to get the 4:3 version for the back-up. Or can this even be done?

usually the widescreen version is on one side of the dvd and standard on the other. I would choose the widescreen version to rip because it's not cropped and takes less space. I haven't seen a disc that has both on one side (yet)8O

And not to mention that with fullscreen version you will have a much lower CQ for your KVCD that with the widecreen one.

Watch your DVD and when you pick your 4:3 version, check your DVD counter display, should say something like 0301 00:00:01 or 1001 00:00:01. The last six digits, obviously, are the timer, but the first four digits, (0301, 1001, 0101, etc.), tell you which program stream is running and the current chapter.

If for example your display said 0301, the program stream would be 03. Load up DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper and select file mode of extract, then select the VTS_nn_0* files, where nn is the number of the program stream from the display.

Your display may differ slightly but should resemble the above.

Yes I know that usually the choices are one each side of the DVD, however I have a couple of DVD'S where I can actually select which format right from the menu before the DVD begins to play. When DVDecrypter defaults to the main movie files how can I tell or preview them to be sure which is which? I'm not sure how to do that from the last post.

Maybe it's this lousy cold that I have that is clouding my thinking on this matter.?

I just figured it out. In file mode in dvdcrypter there are two sets of vob's it's a matter of selecting one right clicking on the selected vob's and selecting stream processing. When it's done checking the info displayed will tell you 16:9 or 4:3 if it's not hte one you want it is the other set of vob's. I'm not sure how it works for Smartripper as I don't use that one.

The widescreen does present more of the picture.

Except with movie shot in super 35 format.

But I see that widescreen.org explain that also (see what they call "Matted widescreen")

If you have question about Cinema I used to be in charge of the theater of my college for two years. I can lighten some dark points for you.

My only real question regarding widescreen is just this:

On some dvd's the widescreen or letterbox is very thin or small and on other dvd's the widescreen is larger which is easier to watch. What's up with that? I have a 27" screen tv standard format & some of these very small widescreen movies with barely any height to them are even hard to watch on a 27" TV.

The ratio range for movie in theater runs from 1.85:1 to 2.55:1.
Most of them are 1.85 and have very little bar on 16:9 TV (16/9 = 1.77, very close to 1.85 - some tv do not even show a black bar) or 2.35 and you have big bars. But the bar are even bigger with 2.41:1 and 2.55:1 !

So on a widescreen tv that same small letterbox movie would fill the whole screen?

@D&C, I don't recall saying that but I would agree with that statement :wink: Although for me, widescreen movies took awhile to get used to. I couldn't stand the black bars at first 8O

And you are right. I said that ! This time the board is coming crazy because I verified my posst before to kill the window and all was okay.
Or that is me that become nut and I have to stop making KVCD till 5am when I work a 8 ! :-)

:? :roll: Uhhhhh....okay, for some reason my previous post in this thread has been drastically changed from what I originally wrote here (I will assume it was just a Moderator***cough***Dialhot?***cough*** :wink: :lol: .... accidentally hitting the "Edit" button while he was reading my post, instead of hitting the "quote" button...it's happened before). I had written a short reply to Rendalunit about how I've actually seen a few different dvd's that have both a fullscreen and a widescreen version on the same side of the disc, so it's not entirely uncommon.

And I also replied in some detail to nighthawk about how to rip his dvd in IFO mode and look under the "stream processing" tab to see which version of his movie he was ripping (4:3, or 16:9). That's an easy way to see which version to choose. I also warned him about how it takes more space to encode a Fullscreen version instead of a widescreen one, and menioned how I dislike watching crappy fullscreen Pan&Scanned versions of widescreen movies since that is not how the director originally intended it to be seen by the audience on the big screen, and it needlessly cuts off valuable movie details.

Whomever it was who deleted/altered my post ( :wink: ), don't forget to have a cup of coffee in the morning before you post! :lol: But that's okay.... :)
