I'm what you would call a "first-time caller, long-time lurker".

I finally got myself a standalone DVD player - the CyberHome CH-DVD320 - so I could really start experimenting with KVCD and actually see the results, and I just wanted to take a minute to thank kwag and the forumgoers for making it possible.

I've done a few encodes over the last six months or so, and I have a few years of DiVX/Vdub/etc under my belt, but I'm still moderately new to KVCD, and from what I've seen of all the possible ways to put them together, it's quite a can of worms. Still, even with the default TMPGEnc templates it's managed to impress the heck out of me.

Back in October, I managed to fit the director's cut of Battle Royale (almost exactly 2 hours!!) on a KVCD and take it to a Halloween party to play in the background for my friends. It played just fine, but I botched something in the AVISynth settings, while trying to put the .srt subtitles underneath the letterbox so they wouldn't block any of the action, and half of the subs ended up below the bottom of the picture... Still, it gave me a chance to show them something they'd never seen and brag about KVCD to whoever would listen!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, thanks for giving me a new hobby. I am eager to be frustrated by the quest for the perfect KVCD.

As a follow-up, it looks like I'm going to be putting together several 120+ minute KVCDs, thanks to Phil's optimal script in the AVI->KVCD forum (V4, except for BlindPP which I haven't tried yet). The conversions are from vintage TV captures (Brisco County, Jr. and Sledge Hammer, to name a few), so they don't have to be sparkling clean, but the only thing I'm currently debating whether to shoot low with 352x240 or try to at least get 352x480.

With the optimal script at 352x240, it still looks good, and I'll be able to fit at least three 44-minute episodes, possibly 4 (close to 180 minutes!). I'll probably burn a few 240's to a CD-RW and see if they're as tolerable on my TV.

Lesson learned: the basics are easy enough to be attractive, but in the long run, it's really worth the time and effort to learn more about filtering and other finer points of conversion to get the most out of each frame. Thanks again for existing.
