I burned the 3 samples to play on my APEX 5131 and saw 3 different results. Sample 1 (hbo_cap) played perfectly. Sample 2 (city_hall) displayed a rythmic jerk. Sample 3 (bugs) had the audio out of sync.

Not having a definitive answer, I decided to try to rip Good Will Hunting (126min). I had to use 352x240 (CQ = 70) to fit on a single CD. Could've probably bumped the CQ up to 74, but didn't for this first attempt. I was very encouraged at first because it seemed to play flawlessly with the quality being above adequate, however at several points in the movie there were slow downs of the video that would cause the video/audio to be out of sync. This happened ~15 times and would only last from 1-5 seconds. Doesn't bother me much, but I'd like to improve if possible. Problem is, it seems I'll only be able to debug using full length encodings. Any ideas, comments or suggestions?

Hi Wet !
Welcome !
Good place to begin !
If your player can handle SVCD than try ( as i always suggest ) remux and mux with bbMPEG as SVCD. Simple and easy .
How to do that follow the guide => http://www.vcdhelp.com/bbmpegedit.htm
Burn as SVCD (with NERO FOR BEST RESULT try MPEGAV instead of MPEG2)

I hope that will solve the prob !
Good luck !

bman,

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I had seen that this can fix audio problems, but didn't know if it'd fix the video slowdown. I'll let you know if it works.

I also have a similar issue on my Apex 1100W. I had forgotten till I read this post, but I also had the HBO cap sample play perfectly. In fact, one other also played nicely, was the Farscape clip (1st in the old sample list).
I know that sample was not made by Kwag, not sure what is different. I have tried demuxing and remuxing Kwag's Mummy KCVD clip as "SVCD", still didn't quite work right, brief sound cutouts every few seconds. I haven't done extensive testing on other KVCDs I've made by lowering res to 352x240.

Hi gvarney:

The only difference to the samples I made is that the Farscape sample ( made by our good friend bilbogod! ) was 352x288 PAL.

All other samples I made are 352x480 NTSC. So maybe the problem in your DVD player is the high resolution of 352x480.

The hbo-cap is different in the sense that it was not "Inversed Telecined" and the frame rate is 29.97 instead of 23.976 as on the other samples.
But the resolution is also 352x480 as in the other samples.

Maybe some DVD players don't like 23.976fps.

Thanks, Kwag. That's something I hadn't thought about, that maybe the problem is the frame rate. Guess I can mess with encoding at 25fps, though my TV isn't PAL, the DVD player plays it, obviously. Or I guess I could go with the higher file size of 30fps..

Wet,

Your problem may be coming from your DVD player. I recently got rid of an apex DVD player and then bought a GE 1101P. Unfortunately, apart from the dvd player housing, it's the same thing. I've noticed that these dvd players seem to be notorious for causing jerks in the video, audio sync problems, as well as other non-desirables. I fixed my problem by buying a pioneer 434 for 120.00 on Ebay. It's pretty much the best there is for creating VCD's and messing with the standard templates. It plays everything.
