Mpeg1 vs mpeg2
Hey all,
Firstly I must say thanks for the excellent resource that is here. I have been lurking for a while and it has really been a great place to learn about video encoding. I have successfully used the KVCD format for 2 or 3 movies, and I have to say that I have been enjoying only using 1 CD for the movie rather than 2. However I have a question regarding mpeg1 vs mpeg 2. Basically I capture at 352 x 288 and encode this to watch on my dvd player. I would capture at a higher resolution but I don’t have the HDD space or the PC specs. 352 x 288 capture is nice for me 2 hours = 6 gig. I then encode with TMPGenc with the KVCD template and get a relatively nice movie. Now my question is at 352 x 288 using KVCD is it preferable to encode in MPEG1 or MPEG2? I have heard many conflicting theories, such as mpeg 2 is better ALWAYS, or mpeg1 is better at lower bitrates. I would be interested in opinions on whether to use mpeg1 or mpeg2 at 352 x 288. Also just to point out computability is not an issue my dvd player plays everything thrown at it, Cheers Pug |
