Resurrecting FrankenCoder ?

I know that this sound a bit crazy, but maybe it's crazy enought to work.
As I'm not programer, I can only sugest things.

This post is to all programers, and especialy to Kwag. You tryed some time ago to build KVCD encoder for windows, but you abandon this.
What about grab ffvfw CVS, carve only MPEG1/2 part of it, and improve with all missing parts like VBV seting, min max bitrate, noch matrix for MPEG1, etc ... you for sure know beter what this encoder needs
I know tha this probably take alot of time, many :expert: and :crashed: , even more  :banghead:, maybe :beard: and few of :playball: . But at the end when you succes (and I'm sure this is possible), we all will    to you, and when I visiting Puerto Rico (maybe some time) I promise I'll visit you and we will :drink: :drink: :drink: till :drunkard: .

Never thought of that.
I think this is an excellent idea. I don't know if Karl has time enough, maybe not.
But to all the guys out there that have the necessary skills and some spare time: please at least take a look at the source code, and tell us if it's feasable or not.
God bless KVCD

This is still an interesting post to add to your idea:

http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=61036#61036

Look specifically and the second mail from the mailing list I posted.
XVID rate control seems to be much more simple than FFMPEG's and has already been tried successfully. And I'm sure that a simpler code like XVID's although lacking a real max/min bitrate enforcement, could be tweaked/modified for it.

The rest of the stuff over the libavcodec's MPEG-1/2 part.... it's a worthy challenge :)

And maybe a Linux port one day! :hihi:

PS: I'm not a developer.

Another option for a decent open-source MPEG-2 encoder: XVID code entirely. I don't know how much can MPEG-1/2 be considered like trimmed versions of MPEG-4.

If so, cutting the MPEG-4 features could be enough. :!:

And it would benefit from great motion estimation code, rate control, etc :)

To use some part of XVID rate control is also great idea. I even tryed to do first pass with Koepi's XVID, and second pass with ffvfw, and results war bether than with ffvfw first pass. Of course max bitrate is stil sky-rate, but this was not what I wanted to test.
Night is comming uppon my eyes, and Kwag has now center of day, so he have time to read and think, in opposite to me ;)
Good night.

I'm with you pals 8)
In fact I had your same idea, but never posted it because I thought it must be very difficult to rebuild or tweak a code like ffvfw might have, and just for fun. But now, that you suggested that, I want to say I'm with you.
... and of course, no problem with betatesters, here you would find a lot of entuthiastic ones
PS neither a developer here... this thread is begining to need a developer.

I gave up on "nudging" on kvcd for a 2nd chance w/ Mr. Franks. kvcd was
adimint (spelling) about putting it ta bed (at least at the time I "nidged" him
about it)

But, before all this was going on, I was emplementing a GUI for Mr. Franks.
But, then pretty much everything died, and I ended up falling asleep to this
idea and then some 8)

And, since I don't feel comfortable w/ C (or C++ for that matter) I'm not
going there. I'm a Delphi fan all the way  Now, if you got some
MPEG-2 source code in Delphi (aka, Pascal) I'd give it a whorl, but still, it's
like asking a blind man to walk (w/ a kain at least) 8) though can be done.
.
.
I've always wanted to build me an MPEG encoder of some sort, but lacked
the knowledge in it. In stead, I resort to command-line gizmos (better than
nothing) like, bbMPEG; mplex; mpgtx to name a few, and now making my
headway w/ mencoder (and ffvfw too) and that's about as far as I've gone.
.
.
But, I"ve always wanted to "aid" in some movement w/ Mr. Franks. And,
should there ever be another "movement" I'll be their, (if asked, and have
the time etc)

Cheers,
-vhelp

Hi 2 all.
Now I can explain why I started this thread.
I'm sorry for say that, but i don't think that Milan will return. I don't know the reason, but last sing form him I found is from 10th June 2003 on doom9 forum. Also not only me ist wary about him. I think tha couple of peoples (Andy, Athos) in doom9 started new project aka. ff-mod. In coincidece they started idea of this 2 days ago :) I realy didn't know about it till today. This is the thread, and this is the end of it with idea of ffdshow mod. We may wait for they results, but i think that they are only intrested in MPEG4 encodings. This way we get no benefits from this.

Platform independent :D
Actually the origin of the source code was Linux :D
So we'd have to make a windows portable one ;D

bilu 02-14-2004 12:42 AM

I know, I was kidding :)

Having to worry about re-porting a fork from a Linux project... kinda funny :)
