SKVCD vs. CVD
 

Has anyone done a test to compare the quality of CVD's vs. the new SKVCD?
I know this sounds like a "teaser" :wink: but I just want to know, because I've never done a single CVD. I know that the resolution is the same, 352x480, but I'm almost sure that the SKVCD has a way longer play time because of the KVCD's GOP and Q. Matrix.
And if a CVD is modified with the same GOP and Q. Matrix used in KVCD's then it's not a CVD, but a SKVCD :lol:
So I would like to know how does it compare, if anyone has done some CVD encoding. And if CVD looks better, then please let me know ASAP, as I will dedicate some time to match or exceed a CVD quality, while still maintain the longer play time as in all KVCD templates.

And has a CVD or SKVCD a better quality than a vbr svcd?

For yet i have only made svcds with ligos lsx encoder, but than i got not so much min on one cd.

I tested a standard CBR @2,520Kbps 480x480 SVCD created with TMPEG, against the same one minute clip created with the new SKVCD. The result is a better picture with the SKVCD. The reason is that the SKVCD encoded with the KVCD Q.Matrix, produces less artifacts around edges. So the picture looks better than a SVCD, even though the resolution is 352x480. As for a CVD, same applies. CVD is also 352x480(576), but the result with the Q. Matrix in the SKVCD is much better than the mpeg created with the standard TMPEG GOP and Q.Matrixes. Plus you get the added bonus of long play time. I encoded the complete "Kate & Leopold" movie with the new SKVCD, and the file size, video stream, is 1,419,467KB. The audio, encoded at 224Kbps, is 201,650KB. So muxed together, the total file size is 1,621,117KB and just fits perfectly in two 80 minute CD-R's at the quality of the sample provided. I believe that to aproach that quality in a standard SVCD, you would need 3 CD-R's. ( Just too many disks for me :wink: )

has the skvcd a dvd compliant resolution?
so that we can fit it without re-encoding on one dvd-r
because i know that a resolution for pal 352x576 is also dvd standard like 720x576.

so, for the future, all dvd-players should be able too play a skvcd like the same waht a cvd does?

The SKVCD creates standard 1/2 D-1 DVD resolution 352x480(576), but it's not DVD compliant, because of the long GOP and the 44.1Khz audio. So you can't just burn the MPEG as it is onto a DVD-R. If you want to make it DVD compliant, you'll have to sacrifice space, by lowering the max frames per GOP to 15 (PAL) or 18 (NTSC).
Better yet, use the KDVD templates, which are already set for this. MPEG's produced with these templates are DVD compliant.
However, SKVCD templates are a great substitute for SVCD's and CVD's :wink:
