Ksvcd - deinterlace or not?
 

Hmm.. I tried to search about this thing, but almost all posts were dealing with ntsc.

I have this new DVD (Finding Nemo) PAL, and dvdavi tells that it is PAL interlaced. I know that dvdavi is not so accurate to get information like intelace/progressive.

My target is to get mpeg-2 ksvcd 352x576. If that dvd is really interlaced should I use some deinterlacer like FieldDeInterlace() ? How do I encode it with TMPEnc ? Interlaced or not ?

What about if that dvd is really progressive ? Ok no deinterlacer is needed, but do I have to encode with tmpenc non-interlace ?

I am using latest optimal MA script from kwag.

Do scroll to fast motion parts, IF you see comb artifacts, then I guess you just deal with a PAL telecined means phase shifted stream.
If no combig artifacts do appear then just follow the known progressive encoding movie way we do proceed here in 90% cases.

Follow these steps:

If combing appears:

1. Try to use in avisynth just after the mpeg2source-line a telecide(guide=2,post=false) to just restore the progressive frames.
2. IF that not helps, try to use instead Fielddeinterlace(full=false,blend=false)
3. If by this the result is a jerky movement, try instead Fielddeinterlace()

I will check that !

But do I really have to deinterlace/telecide if I am encoding mpeg-2 (with ksvcd template encoding method is interlaced) ?? Or is that deinterlace thingy needed for some other reason (like resizing) ?

I understand that if encoding to mpeg1 you have to deinterlace, because mpeg1 does not support interlaced material. But is there a benefit deinterlacing with mpeg2 ? What results I get if I deinterlace and encode 352x576 progressive (is that completely wrong) ?

P.S. This interlace thing goes way beyond my head 8O

As said, if combing appears do follow my recommendations as expl. above. By this you'll end up with a PROGRESSIVE stream which can be encoded using mpeg1 or mpeg2.

Im about 100% shure that your "Nemo" stream won't be "real" interlaced as its a cartoon and by this it was NEVER shot on VIDEO material but rendered for film material usage, means originally rendered to 23.976 fps NTSC. For PAL usage in regular they do a simple PAL speedup to 25.000fps and do add the country specific audio track witch matches with the speeded up fps (25.000). = still progressive but 25.000fps PAL.

BUT! In some cases they also do a complex framerateconversion incl. blendings which ends up in combed parts, means if you just apply a reverse phase shift (the telecide recomm. above) this will still end up in blended frames = ugly movement.
But I don't think they did the PAL conversion in such an unprofessional way.

So follow my recommendations BASED UPON THAT NO COMBING ON FAST MOVING SCENES DOES APPEAR (check that using the slider below in DVD2avi by scrolling to a fast moving scene!!)

It is progressive !!

But I can't get decent CQ with 352x576 mpeg2... CQ is about 63

Maybe I have to drop down to kvcd 352x288 mpeg1

Finding Nemo is already known on the forum to be on of the worst either sources to encode. And 63 is really not so bad :-)

Well I made a decision !! I predicted the movie to with destination 352x576 and 90min CD and got CQ 70 ! Now I am happy :)
