KVCD Basics?

I'm capturing VHS to the hard drive. I'm confused as to what resolution I should capture with; being that the final will be KVCD. The choices are full d1 (720*480) or ½d1 (352*480). Thanks for getting me over this hurdle.

1 - Thread Subjet should be KVCD Basic.
2 - Your capture resolution depends of how much video you want to capture, and in what media you want to put it. But I think you must to capture at max resolution possible. Later you can resize it, without significant lost of quality. But if you capture at less res, an later you want to resize up it, you will loss a lot of quality.

I'm capturing 2 vhs tapes slightly over 2hrs total; would like to put them onto DVD+R media using KDVD. I understand that KDVD has 2 formats ½ and full D1. Is one better than the other?

My thinking (not experience) is that if I use kdvd ½d1 at 352*480 that I could caputre at 640*480 or less (keeping the /480) and I would be alright? Again, thanks

How you can see at http://www.kvcd.net/dvd-models.html KDVD Full D1 permit you about 6 hs. DVD quality DVD compliant. It is not problem for you.
I think your capture software, will permit you to capture in more standard res, like 720*480. Just try the settings. But if not, capture at max res you can. Then encode using Optimal Script for avisynth with resizing options enabled.
BTW, are you capturing DivX, XviD or MPG?

I'm capturing to Huffy 2.11. Capture software offers 352*480/720*480. Is there an easy Optimal Script for Avisynth or does it have to be configured manually; I'm not enept with Avisynth yet, so I'm using filters in Virtualdub then frame-serving.

I don't know how much GB or Mb can to have your capture nor if it is mpg2, but if it is mpg2 (capture at 720*480) audio at 48 Mhz, with less than 4.7 GB, you can burn it directly.
You don't tell me what kind of video is your capture. (mpg1, mpg2, divx or xvid)
Maybe you need to read this thread: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8753

Better than this, your answer: Capture at 720*480

Later we will see how to reencode if necessary.

I capture as AVI (Huffy2.11). Usually audio is at 41000Hz 16bit.. should it be 48000Hz?

It must be in 48Khz if you want to put them on a DVD. On a VCD, the standard is 44.1Kz (not 41) but a lot of standalones also accept 48Kz.

Hi Phil, . . you are knowledgeable and have been following my thread. Basically, I'm capturing 2 vhs tapes to the hard drive (both are the same movie - about 2+ hrs)

My initial question is what resolution to capture with (352-240/480, 704/720-480 etc.)? I plan to use KDVD that has 2 formats (½/full d1). When should either be used/do they both have the same result?

Prior to this post, I have been using 41kHz and the conversion program changed it to 48khz; is this ok?

Another issue/problem is alot of dropped frames when capturing with Huffy2.11 at high resolutions. I have an AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz.. soon to upgrade to Barton 2500/3000; this hopefully might resolve this issue. Is MJPEG just as good as Huffy?

Thanks for your support.

Unfortunally I don't know anything in capture. Incredible can give you much more hint on this than me on both resolution and harware matters.

Not a all ! MJPEG is like MPEG and JPEG (in picture) a degrading codec. Huffyuy is a lossless codec that means that you do not degrade your source when you encode with it. For sure, it claims for more disc space than MJPEG but this is a necessaary pain if you want to have a godd quality on the end.
