Convert AC3 448kbps to AC3 256kbps with softencode for KDVD?

I am making a KDVD and want to fit approx. 3 movies on 1 disc.
From my dvd rip I have the orig AC3@448kbps, and is 370 mb.
I could put into a mp2 but I thought why not keep the 5.1 for when I upgrade my home system.
So I used besweet to extract 6 wavs opened up Softencode and set bitrate for 256 kbps. 1 hour later I had my new AC3@256kbps and only 211 mb - it wouldn't render so I ran it through besliced and it plays perfect. Did a comparison and it sounds great-as good as orig on my setup.
Question is: Has any else done this and will it cause any problems when Authoring/burning/playback?
I don't have a DVD burner yet (couple of weeks I will) so I will make the vob then burn a peice of it to a cdrw and check it out.
TIA.

256 Kbit is far under the limit to have a correct and decent ac3 sound.
Dolby Inc advise to not going down 64Kbit per channel that is 384 Kbits for 5.1. So with 320 you are yet under the recommanded limit. Don't go below.

64Kbps * 5 = 320Kbps is the minimum.
The ".1" is the sub woofer LF components ;)

In soft encode it has the option to enable/disable the LFE(sub woofer channel). By not using it I would be alloting more kbps to the main 5 channels...what do you guys think of that idea?
Would I be creating a peice of crap AC3 file?
Almost better of going to mp2!
I will play around with some short samples, see what happens.

Well I made the kvob  8) (ac3+m2v in bbmux-2hr-1.47 GB) and put a piece on a cdrw and tested it in the standalone.
WOW...it looks and sounds great!
Audio at 256 may be below spec but I don't have the system to notice.
I heard no distortion.
Looks and sounds great, incredible. For the m2v I used Jonny's prediction tool for CCE and it came out dead on. I was expecting to see results like a 2 disc svcd but it is way better.
Thanks alot guys, your answers/tips/guides work killer-and slowly I will become less a speed freak ;)

Info is posted here. Important 4 me was Incredibles guide 5 posts down from top.

I already had the tool installed and I opened once and I was totally confused :banghead:
After reading the guide I started using it right away and was happy.
Now I tweaked a few settings like adjust the Q factor closer to what I think it might be based on expereince with the length of movie and % variance, etc.
Now I ask it to find Q within say 6-8 points and 3% variance of file size. Once it finds that It automatically encodes the avs.
The GUI is not pretty but it functions.
I tried BatchCCEWS as it is layed out very well and very functional and logical gui but I couldn't find away to import Kwag's Notch Matrix so I went back to Jonny's qcce.
So thanks to you guys cuz now I feel like this
:driveby:

Just a little update. Made a couple more Kvobs  8) and both turned out awesome. One was a DVD source and I re-encoded the AC3 from 384 kbps to 256kbps, looked and sounded great. The other was an avi source so for ac3 sound I just used loaded it into the ffmpeggui from
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tools?toolse...uthorfeatures=
and a short time later I had my 2 channel AC3@192.
I always create the full kvob, check it out for visual quality/audio sync, etc.
Then I burn a small (10 min)piece as data on a cdrw. My standalone reads raw mpeg so I can test for visual quality/audio sync, etc. on the dvd player.

3 Kvobs  8)=4.18 GB so should be good to go.

Now to author my first KDVD and I am figured I will use this proggy.
http://users.adelphia.net/~liquid64/dvdauthorgui.html
It is a gui for http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/
I opened up and looks nice and simple...we'll see how it goes.
@Kwag...I reread your answer above and I beleive disabling LFE would not save final size, as you state it is the .1 in 5.1, so I leave it enabled.
I missed that in my dumb question below that. :P
