KVCD: Can't add chapters + Movie thinks it's only 11 minutes long?
I think I finally have a handle on this. I just ripped a 2-1/5 hour film from DVD and endoded it to fit on a 700MB CD-R. The audio and video quality are AWESOME. These old eyes can't tell the difference between the DVD and KVCD versions.
My only problem - and this has been a problem since I started learning about KVCD - is that all my mpegs think they're only from 11-17 minutes long. The full movie plays but the timer says they're only from 11-17 minutes. I think that's why I can't add chapters. I've tried VCDEasy, TSCR, and VCDWizard. They say chapters are added, but when I play them back, either on TV or in any PC player, the chapters don't work. I'm using TMPGEnc, VirtyalDub, and BeSweet/Headac3he to encode. I can\t hel but think the "timing" problem is the cause of my inability to add chapters. Any Ideas? I'd really like to have chapters. TIA :-) Friday |
You have to analyse the movie with VCDEasy and then you can insert chapters.
|
Maybe if you multiplex with bbmpeg error will fix.
|
If the MPEG is damaged then use VCDGear and delete failures and try it again, but I think let VCDEasy analyse the movie before joining.
|
Thanks for the suggestions.
Neither VCDgear nor VCDEasy report any errors. How do I multiplex using BBMpeg? Is there a GUI frontend? And what might I be doing to cause this problem? Everything is fine until I encode the video with TMPGEnc, then it spits out a perfectly good .m1v file, except that the time is incorrect. ?????? |
I found a tool called "MPEG-Corrector" that fixes the timing in my m1v file so I should be able to add chapters now, but it's an extra step I could live without.
Anyone have any ideas what's causing TMPGEnc to output these m1v files with teh bad timing? |
bbmpg: KVCD try KVCD settings
KSVCD: Just select SVCD, put Forced Mux Rate = 0 |
Oh Noo!
I demultiplexed all my (23) MPEGs waiting to be burned to KVCD and ran them through MPEG-Corrector. The timing of the resulting m1v's is now corerrect. BUT, now when I go to re-multuiplex them, I get "Illegal MPEG stream"! Arghh! The "corected m1v's play fine in Core and other players, and the timing is correct, but now I can't rejoin them with their mp2s using any multiplexing tool I have tried, including TMPGEnc. What in the world is going on here? :-( |
Prodater64,
How do I get to that BBM[eg screen yu referenced? All I have is bbmpeg.dll and a bbmpg dos exe. What is the front-end you referenced and where can I find it.? Thanks |
Hi,
Sorry to know you may have broke your mpegs (23?). Here is home of bbmpeg http://members.cox.net/beyeler/bbmpeg.html. If you're under WinXP then maybe you need a newer dll. I'll try to find where. Hope it helps. Cheers |

About your other problem, try demultiplexing yours "Illegal MPEG stream" and after that remultiplexing again. |
boys,
never forget to use the  search... see what i found...and faster: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5965  |
Thanks to all.
Can't multiplex these m1vs "broken" by "MPEG-Corector, not even with BBMPEG." I get some form of "Illegal mpg stream" in every tool I've treid. :-( Tried loading the broken (but with corrected timing) m1v files into TMPGEnc to re-encode, but it won't recognize it as a valid mpg. :-( Tried de-mulitplexing... same thing. :-( Looks like these videos are all hosed. :-( But the original question remains: Why is TMNPGEnc outputting m1v files with the incorrect video-length? Even though they play fine in their entirety? Any thoughts? |

for me is unclear (sorry), then i ask: where?...in pc or standalone player? ...but you wrote: "The full movie plays but the timer says they're only from 11-17 minutes." then i can answer in this case : some standalones show wrong time, not all labels/models. i think the reason is the video vbr! |
Hi jorel,
In Core Media Player, WMP, and Elcard player, the tmer shows the total video length as only a few seconds. Same thing after multiplexing with it's corresponding .mp2. Can't add chapters to movies that think they're only 11 seconds long. :( Thanks for the tip about VBR. As a newbie, I don't understand; aren't KVCDs encoded using CG instead of VBR? I've been using the setting "CQ". Should I be using the setting "Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR)"? Thanks, Bob AKA: Friday |
Oh!,
Don't misunderstand us friend. CQ is VBR. It lowers or raises BR whenever it's needed but tries to make the whole movie seem the same quality. So you should stick to CQ mode. Now Jorel tried to tell you that some standalones don't show correct timings in VBR. Since CQ is still VBR it could be because of that... Cheers |
Actually all mode except "CBR" one are VBR.

#2>> So.... in TMPGEnc, when I load a file and KVCD template for encoding, then click on "Settings >> Video >> Rate Control Mode" should I choose from the drop-down menu: 1) "Constant Quality (CQ)" or: 2) "Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR)" Both seem to offer the same options ("Quality," "Max bitrate," "Mi. bitrate," and "Enable Padding...."). I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong so I can be able to add chapters. Maybe an "Evironmental Setting" in TMPGEnc inb wrong? |

Does your movie play nicely? BTW you were complaining you couldn't add chapters right? Did you encode in "Closed GOP" mode?? Quote:
As Phil said: Anything apart from CBR is in fact VBR. You just use the one you like best. We never figured out which one was best (CQvsCQ_VBR) did we  Cheers |

1) Yes, the movies play great (I just put "The Pianist" [2-1/5 hours!] on a single CD and these old eyes and ears can't tell the difference between the KVCD and the original DVD [at least on a 21" TV]). 2) "Closed GOP" _WAS_ disabled, just like you speculated. I've enabled it, and will let you know what happens. I thought the problem with chapters may lie in my old (APEX AD-3201) DVD player, but they don't work in WinDVD or Zoom Player either. Thanks! |
