asf format for the conversion in TMPG instead of an avi?

Kwag, i was over at the vcdhelp forums, and i came across a thread about getting 120+min. of svcd on one 700mb cd-r. I think the guys name was Y2Fly or something. Anyways, he said something about using asf format for the conversion in TMPG instead of an avi, and the end result would be a smaller file size?

Now, i have a couple of pretty good quality asf movies that are about 450-500mb in size and about 95min long. So, im just curious if there is any truth to what he was saying about using asf files and using them for svcd conversions, instead of avi's?? :?:

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated. :)

lvWSTATICWvl,

That's the thread that started this whole crazy KVCD madness
If I recall, the start of the thread suggested asf to avi, and then avi to mpeg, and suggesting that it was better quality than going straight from avi to mpeg. Which is totally wrong!. That way, you would be introducing two layers of encoding to get to mpeg, instead of just one.
So the idea was completely wrong!

So what do you think i should do with these asf movies i have? TMPG Plus reads them when i load them in, so does that mean i can encode to vcd with your templates? Would they come out better looking than the origional asf file or nah? Would this also mean the final file size should be less since the asf movies are only about 500mb in size?? Also, if they can be encoded, can i use virtual dub and extract the audio to wav? Or do you just recommend leaving it as is?

I know i have a few questions to be answered, but i really appreciate your feedback....Thanx Kwag! :D

Just encode them directly with TMPEG. I'm not sure if FitCD will open a .asf file. Haven't tried that. But if it does, I would process the .asf file through an .avs script, for correct resizing.

Your output quality will never be better than your input, but yes, you can use the KVCD templates. Just select the one closest to the resolution of your original .asf.
