Ok ,until about a week ago Tmpge was pretty much the king,since then i have been playing with Mencoder and am finally starting to get it and now all of the sudden i am seeing QuEnc .

Just downloaded QuEnc and it seems way to simple and straight forward- Is it as easy as it seems.

Now for now i am only doing kvcd so which is better because i have seen in posts lately people saying that Emcoder isin't the best for Mpeg1 and i also read the guide by Nic for QuEnc and it says its for Mpeg2

So what is the best encoder for Mpeg1 andif its QuEnc what settings should be used for mpeg 1

Thanx

Tom

Hi Tom,

They both use basically the same engine. Nic used the libraries directly, and vmesquita uses Mencoder/ffmpeg.
Vmesquitas approach is more modular, because his GUI is separated from the libraries. He just "calls" the executable, and configurations are external, and user configurable. There are several advantages to that
Nic's is a little easier to use, but it doesn't have all the options that Mencoder-ME (vmesquita's) has, and is tightly integrated with the libraries as a complete program.
In reality, both are very good

Thanx Karl,i was confused because of this quote by Dano on another thread

Quote:
I would have to agree with your conclusion about QuEnc, plus it is a little faster than Mencoder. I haven't seen the color problems though. It is a shame the libavcodec's mpeg-1 is no good.
I just assumed that only Mencoder used Libavcodec and not QuEnc

So by this statement he would mean that neither Quenc or Mencoder are very good for mpeg1 in his opinion

Whats your opinion on Mpeg1

@bigggt,

I believe Tmpgenc is still King of the mpeg-1 low res encoders.
MEncoder and QuEnc are great mpeg-2 encoders, but neither have
produced a great looking mpeg-1 video. My problem with Tmpgenc
was (past tense) predicting video file sizes. CQTester has come
closer than CQMatic in my tests. It uses random sampler to predict
file size instead of fixed samples. My actual video file sizes are
within 1% to 2% and sometimes right on the nose. It's not as
fast as MEncoder, but the picture quality is worth the wait

@jorel,

You were right!! I'm not going to abandon Tmpgenc just yet
