the various mencoders and their differences?

I've looked here and elsewhere, and I've found about 8 varitaions of mencoder (windows).

There's the drp version, Vm's version, about 3 -cvs- versions, mingw & cygwin versions.

Which is the better, and what are the differences between the versions (as in speed/quality/features/bugs)?

Which is the version most are using here, that gets best overall results? (This is actually important - your settings files and bat lines are keyed to your version. Well, not 'keyed' as such, but you know what I mean).

I suggest you use the latest CVS version which is included with MencodeME 0.23 or the official 1.0pre4 release, that you can find on Mplayer page.
