OK, I have been successful in the past with ripping a DVD and backing up a DVD. I have recently started down a new path with trying to create an SVCD or KVCD using DVD2SVCD.

I read in other forums about a plugin, DVD2KVCD, I think, that would make things happen with one click. My experience on the DVD side of things has taught me that the best resulats can usually be had by manual means. Or so I thought. I had played around with DVD2SVCD very little in the past since my focus was towards backing up a DVD on DVD media and as I understand it, DVD2SVCD's power is in the conversion and creation of DVD footage on CD type media (aka SVCD, KVCD etc).

That said, I am trying to convert a 125 minute DVD to KVCD and put it on one disk. I am using the latest proggy (v1.22 b1) and it always results in 2 image files instead of the desired 1. Obviously, this is due to some settings I am missing. In looking over several guides here and other places, I believe I have set everything proper. In the bitrate section I have set all to 795 Cd size, and a CQ of .94. loaded the KVCD template in the matrix section, output file type of SVCD (since no KVCD selection exists), and lkeft the remainder as defaults. Here is the SVCD info log:

try the plugin m8

results are really excellent.

there are a number of filters included with plugin too that make encodes look even better.

and dvd2svcd can still be configured manually after you have set it up with dvd2kvcd plugin.

start dvd2kvcd plugin.

select desired output.

cd size/amount.

which filter/script to use.

whether to create cue/bin images or just mpeg.

dvd2svcd will start and NOW you can configure whatever you like from these basic settings.

my advice would be to do a rip with the plugin leaving everything on the default settings.....then do one which you configure and compare.

cheers

In the bitrate section, you should also specify that you only want 1 CD instead of 2... Considering the duration of the movie you're trying to encode, maybe you should try 90 or 99 minutes CD...

Well, I dl'd the plugin and the latest D2S and gave it a go last night on the test DVD I mentioned above. The first result was 2 cd's, but the quality was great. I changed the parameters in the bitrate section making everything 1 cd and 800mb. When I get home later, I hope to find the project on 1 cd with the same great quality. I will update you.

Regards...Al

Ok, since my last post, I have tried to encode a KVCD from a 1hr 45min DVD using the plugin for D2S. No joy. I tried several times and it seems that the problem is still the same. The first problem I had was to end up with 1 bin file. After following some instructions from those on this thread, it finally happened. However, the problem now is that the movie is getting cut off about 30min. I first ran the plugin with all defaults. then I ran the plugin with some of my tweaks (about 10 times atm), including changing to a 90min cd. I always end up with the same result! 1 cd with xlnt quality but, just too short. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I would appreciate some help, please. here is my log:

try changing back to 80 min cdr but set output size to 795mb and lower max bitrate a couple of hundred m8.

say to at least 1800-2000 will still give good results.

Will do, thanks. Ran several tests last nite and started a new one this morning. I have been using the "lite" version up to last nite. Changed over to the 713kb version to see if that is any better solution. As soon as that is done, will use the suggested parameters in the "lite" version.

While writing this, my neighbor came over and "dumped" about 300 (I stopped counting at 200) screeners. While D2S is doing it's thing I am going through the boxes to see what I have inherited. WOW.

Looks like I will be busy for awhile. I hope to get this D2S thing sorted out so that I can use it on these tapes/DVD's. If not, I will need to go back to CCE and my regular methods for encoding these to DVD to get this info out there.

Thanks again, will post my results and progress soon. Happy holidays!

Well, I made those changes and still no joy. However, the encoded file did contain some additional footage. So, I guess I will just do the trial and error thing.

@Dialhot

I didn't know if I should mention that word as it might be one of the forbidden words to use. In any event, if I can't get the hang of this KVCD stuff, I obviously won't be encoding those clips in that format. I will just have to rely on what I do know like CCE, DVD2AVI and TMPGenc to encode those clips. I might just DVD them as well. Still working through cataloging them. Also, still working on this KVCD project as well.

Will keep all up to date. Thanks...Al

Finally!!!!!

My first KVCD using lite 2.0, D2S as the prediction, KVCD template 352x240x288 lbr. The length of the DVD is 132min. Viewing resolution on a desktop and standalone player is xlnt.

Thanks to dialhot, kyuss, livlander and the kvcd board in general for all those tips.

Now, where did I put all those screeners
