Hello everyone

After doing a lot of testing, experimenting, and encoding, We've come to a "best of the best" format for resolution/size/quality. This is really a "merge" of all the ideas from all KVCD, KVCDx2, SKVCD and KDVD parameters.
We would like to announce this as "THE" standard and official KVCD template. All other templates have something in common to VCD, SVCD and DVD. If it wasn't for our different Q. Matrix and GOP, they would just be another XVCD variation. So we're settling for a 3/4 DVD resolution. And the best name, to differentiate from all other templates, is KVCDx3.
The quality produced by this templates is higher than SVCD, and slightly lower than DVD. But viewed on a HDTV, there's no difference to an original DVD. I can confirm this, as viewed on my HDTV, and other "beta" testers as well ( Thanks rendalunit ). There are "NO BLOCKS", even on high speed scenes, thanks again to the Q. Matrix. This resolution is really where the Q. Matrix excels, and is also a very close resolution to what internal Camcorders actually capture, so it should be the choice for that purpose too. The average time per 80 minute CD-R is 60 to 65 minutes. I believe this is the best of ALL KVCD templates.

There are 4 templates available:

(1) KVCDx3-MPEG-1-NTSCFilm.mcf
(2) KVCDx3-MPEG-2-NTSCFilm.mcf ( second choice, for SVCD freaks. Burn as SVCD )

(3) KVCDx3-MPEG-1-PAL.mcf
(4) KVCDx3-MPEG-2-PAL.mcf ( second choice, as above. Burn as SVCD )

All available here: http://www.kvcd.net/dvd-models

The good news, and incredible as it sounds, is that the template number (2) burned as a SVCD, plays on a Panasonic RP-56 AND on the Panasonic DMR-E20, which are not supposed to play SVCD's !! I have burned standard SVCD's and tried to play them on these standalone players, and they don't work correctly. I burned the MPEG-1 as VCD and the MPEG-2 as SVCD, and they play correctly on both players.

This might just be the ticket for some APEX and other brand models. It's up to you to try that out.
As I mentioned above, the quality produced is "a la par" with a DVD, viewed on a DVD player and HDTV. If you have a standard TV ( not HDTV ), you might want to lower the CQ_VBR value, in order to increase play time on each CD-R.

HINT: The CQ_VBR value on the templates is fixed at a value of 30. You can lower the value to 12, and you won't notice any difference on a standard TV set, but you'll increase the play time almost twice!

There are some guidelines to follow, in order to achieve these results. First, you should use FitCD, to create a proper AviSynth script. Here's a sample screenshot, to demonstrate the proper values, using a .d2v ( DVD2AVI project ) file:

You'll notice that I have selected 2 block overscan. ( Thanks shh )
This will save A LOT of space, because you encode only what you can see ( Thanks again shh )
What happens is that when you play back your VCD's, SVCD's, DVD's etc, the television expands your video PAST the edges of the screen. So it's actually trimming some pixels off each side of the screen. When you encode with blocks overscan, you'll see that your mpeg file has small black borders on each side. This will not be shown on your TV when you play back, because it will be streched and flushed with the edges of your TV. So we save some space on our final mpeg files.

The resolution of the mpeg files created with these templates is "528x480" for NTSC and "528x576" for PAL. So there you have it. I hope that all the efforts we've done with all the KVCD variants has provided an optimal set of templates, and officially create a KVCD that is not equivalent to any other standard. Call it KVCDx3 ( for KVCDXtreme, if you wish )

Here's the sample created with the KVCDx3-MPEG-1-NTSCFilm.mcf ( low action and high speed towards the end )

Same sample link on the dvd-models page.

Hope you enjoy the results!,
