KVCD.Org hosting transfer

Hi all :)

This should be transparent, and nobody should notice when it happens, and that is that I am transfering KVCD.org from the current SHITTY provider "ipowerweb.com", to a new provider "www.canaca.com"
Because the portal (kvcd.net) doesn't need a database (it uses the file system as database), I can go for the best offer at canaca.com, which is $3.95 per month (Bronze plan) :D
Look :!:
https://www.canaca.com/virtual.html

Also, I'm dropping the developer's forum as I see that now, with FreeEnc, things are moving a little better and we really don't need that forum. There's not much activity there either, so that forum will no longer exist when the transfer is done.

If the new provider works as advertized, and because I've had good references from other people, related to canaca.com, when the KVCD.Net is close to expire, I will also move it to canaca, with the "Silver" plan.

My current provider wants to charge me for a database backup :!:  :x
The current KVCD.Net MySQL database is so big, that it's impossible to do any backups via HTTP (due to timeouts), so they won't "Zip" if for free :x :x
This means that the day I decide to move KVCD.Net to the new provider, I must shut down the forum for some hours, call the provider and pay a fee for the database backup, and then get the database via FTP and send it to the new provider.
It really sucks :!:
Anyway, that's the latest news, so KVCD.Org will be soon transfered to the new site. Let's see how it behaves

Hi Karl :D,
Hope it (canaca) works as they claim and that it goes as smoothly as possible.
3.95$/month?
Man, even I can host a site (not that I want to) :D
One issue, though:
I am aware that we haven't been using the advanced forum lately and that it does make sense shuting it down.
But where will we post anything related to mencoder?
I know we're all (most of us anyway) very excited with FreeEnc.
But some of us (a minority for sure) are already very tied to mencoder.
Re-opening the old mencoder forum doesn't seem to make sense too .
Does it mean we will "shutdown" mencoder for good at KVCD :?:
Cheers buddy

EDIT: If we want to keep testing it we'll need later builds.
So what if we open a thread at FF forum and make it a locked sticky with a small statement like:
Code:

We are still not going to provide any support to using mencoder and we do not encorage it at this stage.
This thread is only for moderators to post new mencoder builds while we don't reopen it's forum back again.
In the mean time the KVCD will not answer any questions regarding mencoder and it's usage.
You're on your own if you want to try it and you can always check the old forum to grab some info.
Regards.

I think we shouldnt reakt to fast by imideately deleting the dev.area, also the hold mencoder forum part as you never now what will soonly happen at mplayerhq.

If it doesnt push up Karls costs, so why deleting it.

Right here in the moderator's forum :)

Not at all!
Let's talk about it here ;)

That is exactly the problem :!:
The reason for the move to the other provider is the price.
I'm already up to around ~30GB of transfer per month on KVCD.Net.
KVCD.Org is around 15+GB per month.
Soon, we'll go over the limit of traffic, and if I don't move the forum, they will shut down the site when it reaches 40GB :!:
Each month, traffic is increasing more and more.
The prices at canaca are just excelent, and the second plan includes 80GB transfer per month, so that's where KVCD.Net will go.
BTW, in a couple of months, I'll have cable modem with a bandwidth of ~3Mbps peak. So I might just move kvcd.net (the portal) to my own server, and then move kvcd.net to canaca.com.
THEN, I can re-open the developer's forum (and who knows what else!), and it will be hosted on my own FreeBSD server :)
Or, wait, actually because dev.kdvd.net is low traffic, I could install it right now on my server
I have DSL (128/256), but the developer's forum is low bandwidth, so I might just do that :D

I'll take a look tonight, and I'll install Apache/MySQL and the forum. If it looks good locally, then I'll post a message here ;)

I'm uploading the portal to the new provider right now :)
It will be several hours before the name servers get updated, but by tomorrow night, anyone browsing www.kvcd.net, will be hitting the new site hosted at canaca.com :D
When the upload is done, I'll post a temporary link here so everyone can check it out, and see if it's ok.
Uploading ............................................

kwag 08-20-2004 10:38 PM

.............. DONE :!:
Enjoy ;)

Errmm,
Hi Karl :)
You didn't tell us how it went
What are the chances with the advanced forum?
Cheers

Hi Rui,

It went well :)
kvcd.net is already up and runnning on the new site.
Sadly, I have to renew kvcd.net before the 9'th of next month, and due to the database size, I must renew in the same hosting (ipowerweb) for another 1 year term :x
This will be the last term on Ipowerweb, as next year, kvcd.net and kvcd.net will be consolidated on a single site at canaca.
For the price there, I can host the portal and the forums on the same place, and I have secure shell access, so database backups won't be a problem.
Right now, I don't have control over the database, and that worries me.
So before september next year, I will transfer kvcd.net over to canaca, and of course, the idiots at ipowerweb will charge me for a database backup, so I can access it via FTP, but that will be the last business I do with ipowerweb.com :!:
As to the development forum, I backed it up completely, but I haven't had a chance to install it.
I might just hold back a couple of months, and when I get my cable modem set up, I will install it AND the portal on my BSD machine.
As a matter of fact, I will probably call canaca and ask them to upgrade my kvcd.net account, and rename it to kvcd.net, and then I can transfer kvcd.net to them.
I'm also considering If the cable provider (Adelphia) proves to be reliable, I might even host all the forums on a local box, because the local cable provider's bandwidth is ~3Mbps, and that's good enough for a forum. I'll just clean up all downloads, etc., and put them off site (free servers), and that way I don't need to pay for any hosting at all. Just my local cable company, which is a fixed fee.

That would be nice.
I got very attached to it, you know?
And I really don't think that using the Mods forum for mencoder related issues is appropriate.
Besides that I even would like you to consider the possibility to move the kvcd.net forum from phpBB to SMF ;-)

Uau. That was too confusing to me

3Mb/s :?: Talk about broadband :!: I wish my cable provider would have such a product too :D

I already thought about that, and if indeed I could import the phpBB database into SMF (there's a program to do the translation :) ), it WILL be a go :D
I too like SMF MUCH better than phpBB
Let's see what happens.
I might surprise you all ;)

Note: I'm still evaluation if I have time to "SEND IPOWERWEB.NET TO HELL"
and set up the KVCD.Net at canaca.com.
You know that this will require that I shut down the forum for at least one day, in order to ask the damn provider to ZIP the database, so I can FTP (download) to myself, and then FTP it (upload) to canaca.com :x
There's no way around that.
But once on the new hosting, the account does include secure shell, so I can do whatever I want with the MySQL database :)
So I can actually install SMF, import the database, and test it.
If it doesn't work (highly unlikely ), I can always fall back to phpBB

Stay tunned...

Edit: http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters

SansGrip 08-27-2004 11:51 PM

Even without the shell access you should be able to do it. Most hosts allow the MySQL data to be downloaded as a file. You could then run the converter locally, and upload it to the new server as SQL. Most of the hosts I've seen allow this kind of thing...

Hi Ross,

Actually, it's not possible when large databases are used, because of timeouts.
Most (all?) php executing functions on a server are limited to 30 seconds, so you can't make a backup of more than 5 to 10MB or so.
Anyway, we're up and running now, as the current provider supplies SSH, and I was able to FTP the ~300MB database  plus another 100MB of site data, and everything should be fine.
It will be some hours before the name servers replicate around the world, but I've redirected the old site to this IP address, until the name "kvcd.net" is visible on everyone's DNS's.

-Karl

kwag 08-29-2004 02:48 AM

@Rui,

I imported the complete database on SMF, and it was a success and a total disaster in a way

The import process went 100% without errors, but then, the complete forum was visible, even the Moderator's forum 8O
Also, all "moderator" atributes didn't get imported, so it was going to be a big task manually changing privileges, etc.
So, I just did a complete full backup of all directories on the old kvcd.net site, and uploaded the complete tree to this new provider.
The only problem we have is with latin character set. Glanzend can't log in now
Look at the French and Portuguese forums, and you'll see what I mean :!:
It's a PHP problem on this site. I've opened a service ticket, and I hope they fix it soon.

Hi Karl,
Damn, I wish it would work
But the good thing is we're back up on a new provider that will cost you cheaper.
And phpBB is not so bad either :D

Yes, I'm aware of that, and it's related to cookies.
Because I'm forcing the forum to operate on a fixed IP, instead of a name (kvcd.net) :)
I'm just waiting another 3 or 4 hours, and when I start seeing the name kvcd.net point to canaca's DNS's instead of ipowerweb, then I'll change the domain name from 66.49.189.7 to www.kvcd.net, and that should fix the problem.
Also E-Mail notifications should start to work, once I make the change.

You see it kinda give us more confidence on the legal matters and makes us laugh like hell in the jokes forum.
So, of course I'd like you to be able to log everytime you want.
Please disregard all my nonsense posts.
You'll know when you read one: as always those have a lot of  and :rotf: and  around ;-)
