Chat Forums

I see they've been added but unused.

May I suggest:
(first a new forum heading CHAT ROOM SCHEDULES, where this post could be moved to)

If some of the experienced guys could volunteer say a half hour or an hour a week of their time to host a "session" We could have something like:

Tuesdays at 7:00 pm Pacific Time, (for example)
Chatroom Session: AVS Scripting Questions and Answers, (example)
Your Hosts, Kwag, Dialhot, Boulder, Vmesquite (also for example.)
[Kinda a dream-team though eh?] (No offence to anyone not mentioned. You all know more than I do, for sure.)

Naturally, time will be the big killer, but If the "heavyweights" out there can regularly put in a half hour or more once a week or even 2 weeks, The forum use will begin to develop regular attendance, then as demand for answers increases, the unscheduled times will be available for general, less regulated chat use. Ultimately, as the chat fills up, we likely won't need the committment from the heavyweights so much, unless they chose to keep doing it for their own benefit as well as ours.

Just a notion.

live chat requires simple questions and answers which can be done with "off-topic" but video conversion often has questions which are very basic and can't be answered with a one-liner. A question like 'how do i convert my movie to kvcd will result in [fell asleep].....[you still there?].......[snore]......[bye]

Well, I think the chat is really usefull for "quick and dirty" talks, but not good for advanced topics. Specially KVCD :)
The problem is, that some questions need some references, and can't be answered "off the top of our heads" immediately. So it's better geared to forum "questions/answers".
Just my thought.

Well, EightBall's idea seemed nice to me at first, but I have to agree with Kwag. Some questions demand a big answer, some thought, or a link that sometimes we don't have on hand. Also there's another problem: each of us lives in a different part of the world, with different timezones... :?

PS: I am not sure if you were talking about me, but I guess you misspelled my name... :D

Could simply be answered by: "Like everyone here, you first start with the basics. Go to the forums, and start reading KVCD-beginners thread. If you come across something you dont understand, you can ask the specific question in the Chat sessions for that subject. "

I agree, the chat sessions posted must include a disclaimer. Users will have to understand that time is limited, questions are rapid fire, not all can be answered, but a referral to the appropriate forum will help.

Yup. I meant you. Sorry about the mispell.
About the timezones. I did consider that, you could simply throw your hat in the ring for the time you ARE available and willing to commit.
You might be available for a half hour each thursday as 2.00 am central time for example, Ren or anyone might have an hour to spare on a Saturday morning.(for example) Timezones are irrelevant. You say when you are free, we set up a post saying at such and such a time, on such and such a day, VMesquita, and Rendalunit and __?___ will be in the chatroom to discuss "Moviestacker ", (for example). These are intended to be rapid-fire Q+A sessions so please temper your questions accordingly. Everyone wants a chance to ask a question. eg" My computer won't install Moviestacker" is not a question to ask here. Post
those questions in the forum as usual.

My thinking is that Members/Users post suggestions for 1/2 to 1hr chat sessions they'd like to see, and volunteers (who have time and knowledge) could pick a topic from the request list and announce the session. Naturally, the more requests for a topic, the more likely to be a turn out. Too few requests might suggest a waste of time, or a one on one with the party making the post. Too many requests might suggest what you have all stated in your comment, difficult questions, research needed, not enough time to answer all.etc. Those would be better served in the forums. agreed.

I don't forsee many of the "peers" to the experts frequenting these sessions. Rather I beleive it will become a newbie haven, where simple questions can be asked and answered, (one-liners), and maybe a disclaimer made in the Chat requests forum, to the effect that :

The chat sessions are intended for simple resolutions to basic problems. If the host feels the question is too time consuming, you may see the following auto-reply: "In the interest of time-use, and fairness to others, (and to yourself), the host feels that your question should be placed in the forums under the appropriate heading. There, a more thought out answer, or related link can be provided as neccesary."

Lastly, I think we all missed the ultimate point. The idea of resident expert chat sessions isnt meant to do anything more than "kick off "the useage of the chat rooms. Once the chats have started to see regular visitors, the "sessions" can be weaned away to nothing. In this world, no one is going to wait until Thursday at 2:00 pm to ask a question, when theres a chatroom full of people who will answer it now.
But until there is a chat room full of users, they will. The idea is to promote site hits, and increased membership by offering what other sites dont. ( I know KVCD is that already) But the best site has to keep innovating to stay the best. Our biggest asset is the decent hardworking helpful people who offer their help. I'm suggesting we call on that asset to be even better. Thats all.
