Problem with Philips/Benq DVD Burner
Hi,
I bought 1 month ago a Philips burner (DVDRW824), with dual capability, but I haven't been able to burn a full DVD since the first day (always stop at 90%, if I burn 4,5 Gb)... (I bought it for cheap! 60 Euros! ) I flash it with benq firmware (the philips drives are build by Benq ), for DL capability, but it occurs the same. I tried various brands, and +R and -R, and nothing works... (even RW...). 10 DVD burnt for nothing! I tried with Windows in safe mode, and the same.. Any ideas? I'm thinking about buying another burner (Pioneer one) for 80 Euros... Thanks Fabrice |
Hi fabrice :),
Is it a DVD related problem only, or are you experiencing similar problems when burning CD? What software are you using for burning? For DVD movie burning I can't recommend anything else  DVDDecrypter burning mode :!: Yep, never failed me with a single DVD so far. And I can't say the same about Nero burning rom that came with this cheap LG burner :( ... Try that. If it's not a physical drive problem and it's not a software problem, it could be a media imcopatibility. But there I really can't help you because some burners work better with cheap media and others with expensive media . But give DVDDecrypter a try. Cheers |
Hi rui,
occurs the same with dvdDecrypter (I love that retry feature, when you burn a RW). Right now, I can't use it anymore, because I get a blue dead screen, because of CDFS-don't remember what- driver... but the burning problem existed before... This burner is supposed to be a +R burner (because of Philips), but nothing get burned correctly. The last test is to give a try to a philips media... I think I'll try another drive: a saw a TDK burner for 39 Euros! (it's only 4X, but who care! and it come with pinnacle software) I'll try burning each of the brands I've got, to see if it's better than philips burner... If it fail: back to the seller! Thanks, Fabrice |
hi, check out this one before you buy: http://www.shopgenie.co.uk/theme_the...urner_page_1_/
One of the best at the monent "computerpeople" says. It burn +&- and also DualLayer I havent tried it myself, but I got a Nec ND-1100A and it works just great. ----------------------- viking |
YEP, NEC and Pioneer are my favorites.

Relatet to "(it's only 4X, but who care! )" my 2cents: 4x Media wont ba available anymore and so you DEFENITELY should by in case of a 4x burner a model which will support 8x Media by firmware upgrades! There do exist Burners wich do suffer from fw-support stop. Means, it could be that in future no 8x Media is supported, wich also means that you buy a device without the posibility for burning actual available medias! 8O VerbatimDatalifePlus 4x Medias have been known as one of the best for its price but the new 8x Disks are worse then the 4x Medias! Just look at the surface and the quality of the dye's edges and you see what I mean. |
Hi,
just saw that: Quote:
But about the X4 media, I don't knew that! So i'll look for firmaware update (from nec, for example! :) ) to see if it's possible to increase the speed. If not, back to the shop! And I'll buy a more recent burner... Thanks, Fabrice EDITED: First try and first success with this burner, and a 'cheap' media (10 DVD+R for 9 Euros!). This is my first DVD! and my DVD can read it without problem I could have done better the authoing, but next will be better! :) ) I look for the nec burner, and I saw that it can burn 8x media, at 4x, sor I think i'll give a try to this burner, and use the philips one only to burn Cd's... |
But watch out as very cheap media is known for a non long life. It could happen that this cheap media will be unreadable in a few months!
|
I know! But as I hadn't been able to burn a single DVD with the previous burner, I bought less expensive medias, to do my tests.
Now that I know that it works correctly (the philips burner hasn't been able to burn a single full DVD!), I'll use more known, and also expensive, medias (one of the recomended brand). Thanks! Fabrice |
Hey Fabrice another remark ...
39 Euros for a OEM NEC 1300A is not cheap but less money then an actual 8xWriting speed model, I know. But do look in a price-search engine on the www where you shurely can get a newer NEC 8xModel or Pioneer 8x for a few 10-20 Euros more. It's worth comparing the prices! And youll get an actual model. :) For example, I wanted to buy a 82cm 16:9 TV Set from Panasonic, the Model I want costs in the regular Store 990Euros, and the cheapest Price of a good known trustable german mailorder house in the www is 579 Euros + 19,95 Shipping of that 70Kg beast 8) |

Good point Phil.
That was the first thing I was searching on the net before ordering: What happens in case of using the warranty. Panasonic does got several service stations all over here in germany. So in my city there's one where warranty services can be handled. A big bonus of panasonic is that they got a deal with DHL-Postal-Worldnet. You do a call to the Panasonic-Servicehotline and they come over via DHL, pic up your Device, bring it to the service and the service does send it back to you. As the warranty is Manufacturerbased and not only Seller-based than thats not a problem. But in general you're totally right, if ordering such big stuff in the www, everybody has to WATCH out which warranty-services are provided by the Brand! Like something as shown above in case of panasonic. I do think in the time of now where the e-commerce market rises more and more as hell that should be obligatory for a manufacturer/brand as cheaper offers do increase the commerce significantly. I think theres no gurantee for a perfect trustable city-store service. - Some little perfect service providing stores do give up and close cause they cant stand the cheap prices of the big markets like Saturn or Mediamarkt. So it could be that such a little store does close during your warranty time. In big stores like Saturn or Mediamarkt the service is a pain in the ass. You have to bring the device by your self and then so or so they do send it to the manufacturers service. Another point: Here in germany there's a law (I think its in pan-european): If you order somethig from the www, you can send it back within 2 weeks if you dont like it (even you switched it on). Even all shipping will be payed back if the article was over 40euros. |

But if you buy a PC in the big stores, the dirty sellers want to sell insurance for this and that.and if you say NO,like me,the warranty from the shop is poor. Its written on the receipt that the costumer was informed about the insurance! A friend of mine bought a HP digital camera on the www from a thrusted shop up here. Two weeks later it fell to pieces, tried to contact the shop,by mail and phone, the mails wasnt even answered and when you called you met a speaking machine. So he called HP,they sendt a new camera with DHL and took back the broken one,all at no cost for the costumer and most important it all happend in a few days. So from my point of view, the shops warranty is worthless. Contact manufacturer directly instead. ------------------------- viking |

What happens very often with online shops is that, when you need to use the warranty, they give you the phone number list of all manufacturers ! (things that is already included in manual of any stuff you buy, but noone never read it ;-)). |

After my order via www I called the hotline of that www-shop promarkt.de and asked something the delivery time related to the logistic Company. Quote:
Also I can watch the tracking/order/delivery status via my account at that www-store (should be obligatory also elsewhere) :) |

The "No Problem" is not the point ;)
The point is that there is a dircet communication possible and it was related to the bad experience of viking: Quote:

Yep, thats a mess!
MCC (MitsubishiChemicalCompany) in general was known as a top of the pops DVD-R Media manufacturer. But the new 8x Medias are a pain in the ass :!: ____  ____ :( Switch to another Brand like Platinum (RICOH04) or something similair. Or try TDK 8x Medias, maybe its worth and their prices also dropped down the last months. Or ... do look at EBAY for offers of the rest of VerbatimDatalifePlus (=MCC002!)DVD-R 4x which are offered in your country :) Thats what I did and I got 4 Cakes with each 25Medias inside for total 60Euros. PS: You burn DVDs at 8x :?: wow, no risk, no fun :D ! I never go above 2x just to be safe. BUT! I think you upgraded your Firmware if an upgrade exists, dont you? ;) |

And as the brand name says it : these are CHEAP ! (15€ for 50 pc) |
From what I know by lurking at cdfreaks.com, DVD+R media should never be burned at lower speeds than the one it's certified for.
Funny though, my 4x media (MCC002) burns much better at 8x than at 4x 8O Much less PI/PIF errors in the area which has been burnt at 8x (the drive burns the beginning at 4x, then a small part at 6x and the rest at 8x). I suspect that it's actually 8x media which has just been branded at 4x. The drive is originally Liteon 401S, nowadays known as 811S, the latest firmware  |
