probably not, but you can always convert the mpeg file to another format on your computer...

I think most people will have a DVD burner within 3-4 years...

what would it be better for an avi file to make (on a long term bases) to play on a dvd player?

- regular vcd?
- svcd?
- or kvcd?

Since people will have to convert their mpeg's to another format in the future
because I doubt that a Blu-Ray DVD player will support VCD's...

It is best to make the highest quality VCD that you can...

So if that means making a KVCD with a 3500 bitrate do it... Your computer will be able to play it but your current DVD player probably won't play a VCD with a rate that high...

Right now your goal should be to make backups that will look good on an HDTV...

Can I jump in here ..

Kwag.. and others (I myself too) enjoy our freedom to encode the SLOW (prehistoric) way today !! It may just become a thing of the past, but don't take it wrong way WE will be one of the few, and PROUD that will be able to say, I did it the CLASSIC way.. back when.

Well, the way I see it is like this.. in 5 to 10 or 15 years from now, encoding (software'wise) will be a thing'ga'da past and instead, a user will just pop in a single chip or slab or card (call it what you will) and basiclaly press a button, and the DATA will just be assigned or memory swapped into the chip.. pop it out, and pop it into your thigin'ga'ma'gig, and you're back in business. All might just be a few seconds at best to complete.

You see, I believe that a NEW format (for data or whatever) will form, and be transparent (during transfer stage) And, CD media (be it what ever it may be CDR/DVDR etc) will STILL continue to be the last resort for off-line media storage. Sort of what the 3 1/4" disks are to a harddrive/cdrom drive today - - still usable, but will be designed for pure DIGITAL data, not MPEG as we know it today though.

They'll just be this massive ALORITHEM (a parser) that all this data will be fed into. It will be up this this (parser) to determine it's final data format destination. It's just a matter of time when this new techknowledgy comes out !! Though.. it's close !!

Have a good evening guys.

In the future, we probably won't need to re-encode. With the speed of processors in say 5-10 years, we'll be able to just transcode to whatever new format is current at that time in a matter of minutes. So I might as well encode now to the highest quality format available (KVCD ), and then transcode that in the future to keep at least that quality. Those doing VCDs and SVCDs now, won't be able to enjoy the "extra" quality that was offered by KVCD encodes .

Just my .0000000002 cents
