KDVD Half and cyberhome CH-DVD 300
 

I burned a couple kdvd half D1 discs. They are working fine on my Sylvania player. That player does not play kvcd at all. i tried to play the same discs in my cyberhome CH-DVD 300 and they do not work. I got one to pull up the menu screen but it was all greenish and fuzzy and shaking horribly. Nothing else would happen after that. i was forced to just eject the dvd. I have two of those players and they both are acting in the same fashion. These were dvdrips of movies I own and ripped myself. The movies are pulp fiction and reservoir dogs. I Ripped them to vob with dvdshrink and used dvd2avi to get d2v files then encoded the ac3 to mp2 in 48 KHz with headac3e, then encoded the d2v along with the mp2 in tmpgenc to 352x480 half d1. I used tmpgenc dvdauthor to create menus and vobs from the movies. I hope this is enough information to help you help me.

If that's the case, then the CH-DVD 300 player can't play ANY regular half D-1 DVDs, because a half D-1 KDVD is also 100% DVD compliant :!:

I don't remember if I ever tested a half D-1 DVD on my CH-DVD 300 (I have one too, but haven't used it in a long time).

Do a little test, and encode a standard half D-1 DVD and see if it plays.
It should exhibit the same effects as the KDVD.

I actually got one of the kdvd to play. It took a lot of times putting it in and ejecting, The menu screen was all screwed and the first movie was badly damaged but the second movie played fine. I believe I should try burning on a slower speed. I burned them at 16x. I guess i was all geeked about getting the new burner so I went at top speed. lol. I will post results when I burn next one.

You should definitely use the speed your discs are branded for. The amount of data to be written every fraction of a second is huge at 16x which means you need to have a very good disc for it to work.

He did not say he don't have a 16x disc. Moreover, burners that can burn at 16x a 8x disc are'nt common.

But I really think that 16x is too much for any DVD Video. Standalone are like Audio CD player : they all read at 1x speed. If there is a weak sector on the DVD, it won't be read.

The same DVD, read on a PC that can read it at 5x or more, will probably be read without problem because the weak sector will be read several time without you know it.

It's just my idea...

I did use 16x verbatim media to burn this file. I tried twice at that speed with poor results on play in the cyberhome. The menus were worthless also on that player. i then burned them at 8x. They play fine and the menus are perfect. I find it odd that only the cyberhome would act in such a fashion. I guess you get what you pay for.

Verbatim isn't as good as it used to be. In fact, I am very sceptical regarding any 16x media.

If you still have the disc you burnt at 16x, try Nero Toolkit's Nero CD-DVD Speed and it's disc quality test (Extra->Disc quality test). Set the scan speed to 4x and post the log here. Might be interesting to see that, I bet the PIF graph is terrible 8O

Generally anything over 4 is considered out of DVD specs, and the quality figure Nero gives is based on that as it drops down fast when you get one spike over 4.

With the 4x Verbatims I still have left, they usually have max 3 here.

So I guess I cannot burn at 16 speed if I want a quality burn then. I figured as much. When i burn with my 52x burner I always use 24x or 32x now because I was getting errors on mp3 discs and audio discs and kvcd. After I started using a lower speed, the errors went away. Shame on the manufacturers. They should make the highest speed be the highest one that is possible without errors.

Its hard to belive that the original DVD Video bought at any
shop is out of the DVD specs.
My home burned discs is burned by Nero or DVDDecrypter,and
verified with no errors.

The results are not reliable if the speed is not constant, and DVD-writers are generally better to use when testing discs. Also reading above 4x is known to be unreliable.

You could try installing/updating the ASPI drivers, Nero has its own ASPI layer as well. You can find updates at Nero's website and Adaptec's as well.

I upgraded both Nero and Adaptec ASPI to latest version,
but still got the message:"Drive does not support this function".
So I guess its a limitation of this drive,its almost 3 years old.
its time to upgrade to Nec 3520A I guess. :wink:

yes. dual layer burners are ranging anywhere from $59- $200 dollars. May as well get one now.
