APEX AD-660: OK. But no play control.

Hi Kwag

Thanks for your efforts. Great help.

Default Templates are not good for APEX AD-660.
I need to confirm but your earlier release with CQ-80
works with minor change. New/Oldest template with CQ-70
hangs.

I was able play CQ-80 template with frame rate set to 29fps
in TMPGEnc.
Here is what I did: DVD2AVI: 29fps (no force film), FitCD: telecide
Vdub: frameserve, TMPGEnc: 29fps.
Got very good quality with no more skips/jumps. if I don't change
TMPGEnc from 23fps to 29fps, Video skips every 2sec. and synchs back.

New template CQ-70 seems to have some problem due to GOP.

My issue with CQ-80 is I loose all control which means VHS is better for me. Don't get me wrong. DVD to VHS also gives me similar quality with play control in half VHS (LP mode) for 140min. I could not get one VCD (352x240) with VHS quality.

I guess all my quality problems are due to Interlace source.

My target is to burn 140min. in 2 CDs with atleast VHS quality and having
control on DVD player so that I avoid VHS (big cassette in size, cost, audio quality, wear compared to 2 CDs). Pl. suggest me good approach to get this. I don't mind using VCD format it I get VHS quality. I tried DVDx, Flask, DVD2SVCD, CCE, Panasonic. Overall I get better in KVCD next SVCD but SVCD needs 3+ CDs for 140min. DVDx and Flask, I have no interlace problems. they are good. DVD2AVI: I don't like it, no direct audio, no de-interlace option, Force film (not good for interlace material).

TIA

Hi gopalkk:

Have you tried the re-mux trick with bbmpeg for your Apex?

Read about it here:

I tried but no luck. Freezing and skipping.

But when I set frame rate to 29 in TMPGEnc, I get DVD comparable KVCD with which I am happy.
9-11MB/minute which is OK for Indian movies I guess as they have lot of action, bright, not that steady frames etc.

I will do more testing why you Oldest and newest templates with CQ-70 have problems.

Can you comment on when to go for SeVCD, Kingviper, scissor etc templates?

I am looking to replace VHS with comparable sharpness (extra quality in colors and sound is good) in 2 CDs for Indian interlaced NTSC DVD movie of avg. lengths 160min. I also don't want to loose control on my DVD player.

APEX AD 600 A

I just used your KVCDx template
http://www.kvcd.net/templates/KVCDx2-CQ-(NTSCFilm)-BETA.mcf
on a clip from The 5th Element. I put it on a non-standard VCD and it played OK. I didn't change any of the settings at all. During playback I do have the ability to FFW and RRW up to 4X. I tried the same clip with setting the frame rate to 29.97 and it looked perfect. Wonderful quality. For others who can't get thier Apex AD 600 to playback correctly, remember to turn PCB OFF (it's a little button on your remote).

Hi Matt

Thanks for update. Do u see improvement when u set 29fps? With no changes, on 660, I get video skips. ;-(

After reading so much still I don't understand how people are getting VCD with commercial VCD quality with standard VCD template.

New KVCD2 704x480 template is owesome. But, again, problems:

APEX 660: hangs on 3rd sencond. Period. when I raised fps to 29 only audio comes for 2secods and hangs.

KOSS (Target sells) portable DVD: this is much much better; skips audio every 3seconds. with 29fps, this almost perfect.

I am pretty sure that, this is something to do with bitrate, VBV etc.

multiplex, PBC on/off or audio settings make no difference.

Pl. suggest good generic settings for VBV for this h/w and compression.

TIA

FPS?

I didn't know what was going wrong before when I used the template without making any changes. All I knew was that my video was skipping. I assumed it was the frame rate. I don't know what 24 FPS is used for, but I do know that VCD is supposed to be 29.97 so I changed it. It's not a bitrate problem. I don't think... the bitrate on the template is not set to be variable... that's what the CQ is, I think the CQ stantds for Constant Quality. I am just a beginner at this stuff and I don't fully understand all of it, but I know what looks good on my TV and this template works!
