Hi digitalvideo,
What you can do is take advantage of a higher bit rate
If you only can play 352x240 resolutions, it means your DVD player is very strict with VCD resolutions. You could still probably raise your MAX bit rate to around 1,800Kbps and have better quality than a standard VCD.
You could also try one more thing, and that is to encode as MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1 at higher resolutions. You might want to try encoding with the SKVCD template and then burn as non-standard VCD. Don't burn as SVCD. If this works, you'll have a very high quality video, almost as sharp as SVCD, but with over 60 minutes of play time on each CD-R. Maybe even 120 minutes if you use file prediction
