APEX AD-600a (probably others) plays x3 720x480 MPEG-2
 
This is good news to me as I can keep full resolution when needed.
FYI, 704x480 resolution video skips.

I have settled for x3 MPEG-2 1/2 D1, full D1, DVD resolutions as its more compatible with other players like Samsung, KOSS etc.
