Jerky VCD Playback?

Having cut my MPG to an 80min CD the playback is pretty jerky on my stand alone player (hasnt been a noticeable problem in the past). It plays about 0.5sec then the picture noticeably jumps to the next (nth?) frame; obviously more of a problem on actio scenes. Looking at the original MPG and playing it back on the PC it is not jerky at all.

Is there a reason for this?

mike

P.S. Using latest version of VCDEasy

andybno1 01-27-2003 03:01 PM

yeah know what you mean, I done divx to kvcd and near the begining of the movie the camera zooms in which should be smooth but its jerky its like it pauses every so many frames.

Hello

What about the sound?

I ask because i had the same problem with an early encoding experiment of mine: the video was jerky, AND the audio had a slightly lower pitch than normal, I mean the voices were lower, as if played at a slow speed, even if the sound was in perfect sync with the picture...

At first i thought it could be a video bitrate problem, then i realised that my player wanted me to downsample the audio to 44100 khz.

Now everything's fine.

Hope this helps.

andybno1 01-27-2003 06:32 PM

sound was fine for me just when the camera zoomed it was jerky.

In fact, I have stuck this CD back in my PC and played it back there and it isnt jerky playback at all.

I guess it must be something to do with my stand alone player (Cyberhome ADL 528), but it doesnt do it to all disks.

rhino 01-28-2003 04:25 AM

@milksmith:

I have a cyberhome ADL528 and there issues with this machine. Just go to http://forum.cyberhome-help.de to learn more about that.

Also, there are different firmwars and people have had different results. One of the things that has been noticed is, (S)VCD's in ntsc format seem to play better when the machine is set to PAL mode.

And or course, always make sure you use the correct template when authoring. I did a few ntsc films in pal template under VCDEasy and Nero and this caused frequent jumping.

Cheers,

Many thanks for the pointers. I have upgraded the firmware to 10.01. Not sure if this helps (or not!) though, but this page

http://www.harkcom.demon.co.uk/cyber-pages/bugs.htm

suggests that there is a "stuttering" effect apparant. That site also has ISO images of past firmwares so its possible that they might solve the problem but then you lose the fixes of 10.01 ;)

Which firmware do you have??

rhino 01-28-2003 04:48 AM

I am using 10.01. I have just tried a ntsc film done using KVCDx3 Mpeg-1. Setting the player to NTSC mode and playing the disc causes it to be jerky, but switching the machine to PAL, it plays back smoothly.

I tried muxing with TmpgEnc and bbMpeg and the results where still the same.

I have heard that playback is supposedly better with the previous firmware (also available from that site). I'll try later downgrading the firmware and see what happens.

If you read the forum, there is a large debate over whether 10.01 is better or worse.

Cheers,

I have a alba dvd 114 how do I update my firmware?

miksmith 01-28-2003 05:24 AM

Just upgraded to the previous firmware (15e20-13-0927) and this has solved the stutter problems totally. VCD's play very smoothly now. Looking at the bugs page for 10.01 it sure sounds like they need to release a new firmware pretty quick!

Thanks for the thoughts!

They don't make the adl528 anymore. It has been replace with the 302, 405, 505. So the likely hood of them releasing a new firmware is low. But you never know:)

Must go back to 15e20-13-0927 and see if this how this looks.

@andybno1:

I don't know the alba machine (though it gets good reviews). Check out the manufacturer's website and see if they offer firmware upgrades or have a search in google for something.

Cheers,.

Jerky Video Covertions

In my experience there are two reasons (They may be many more), why you get jerky video conversion, they are:

1. The orginal video was encoded in NSTC and you converted to PAL. To cure this use NTSC conversion instead if you can.
2. The motion prediction is set too fast, to cure this use 'Fast motion prediction(Slow)', instead of normal, etc.

miksmith 01-29-2003 05:00 PM

In this instance the playback was fine on the PC, just on the player. Seems like its a firmware problem for *some* VCD's. It was a PAL video encodeda s PAL at the slowest motion search setting using 1/2 DVD. THe results are really excellent.

Rhino:
How did the upgrade (downgrade!) go? Much of a difference?

rhino 01-30-2003 03:27 AM

@miksmith:

Haven't been at home long enough to try anything. Probably be next week before i get around to this. Interestingly though, on 10.01 VCD's seem to play nicely when the output of the player is set to PAL (even for NTSC).

The nice thing about 10.01 is you can turn off macrovision. This always kicks in when i play region 1 dvd's, even though it is the original in the player and it is going straight into the TV, and not via the VCR.

Cheers,

Try opening the clip with Bitrate Viewer. Pay particular attention to the Peak bitrate. I have found that with CQ I have have seen bitrate spikes to say 2800. My Panasonic RV-31 doesn't like anything about 2600. It then cause it to jerk and stutter like you say.

Just a thought

Hi nicksteel,

Any VCD guide will work. I recently bought a book "From VHS Video to DVD" which talks about a program "MovieXone" which you can use to make menus. What you do is make all your clip effects ( dissolves, etc. ) and convert these clips with your menu buttons and all to small mpeg files. Then it's just a matter of adding them with VCDEasy before your main movie . There's a free vesion available. Try it out :D http://www.aistinc.com/products/moviexone.asp

ARAGORN 01-30-2003 01:21 PM

Hi Kwag!

Here in France we have a great program called all4(S)VCD that give you the possibility to create animated presentations ( for example it captures one minute of each chapter in bmp format) that you can encode with tmpgenc. you also put song. It creates bin cue with chapters and presentations directly that you can burn with nero. It has a lot of other options that i cannot describe here :D For those who can understand french it's incredible and freeware.

Here' the link: www.formidable.fr.st   :buzz: :dunce:

Hi ARAGORN,

Will take a look at that :D

Thanks,

Good point! I had actually thought about bitrates but hadnt bothered checking it. Anyways, my KVCD LBR peaks at 1621, with an averageof 709, whilst the 1/2 DVD peaks at 2367 and averages 1700. I guess the average is a fairly good estimate of what sort of bitratesa player will support, althoughthe standard deviation would probably be more useful. It might be quite a useful idea to compile a list of players (and firmwares!) that support different templates (perhaps useful defined settings and a reference 5min?? file) which would allow people to limit the max bitrate. High action is obviously where the problems are as the bitrates really spike.

Kwag, might it be worth setting this up as a sticky message??
