my mobile player only plays KVCDs at 352x240?

I finally finished converting Shrek to KVCD and found that my mobile player plays KVCDs @ 352x240. Now what I did with my script was size it to 720x480 and set TMPGEnc's video arrange method to "full screen (keep aspect ratio)" and used the KVCD-CQ-352x240-_NTSCFilm_-PLUS.mcf template. Outcome was fantastic. :D

Now I was wondering, is it possible to use the KVCDx3-MPEG-1-NTSCFilm.mcf template, modify the size to 352x240 and use that same script and the "tweeks" mentioned above :?: The reason being is that KVCDx3 is suppose to be way better.

Thanks

Hey TCC,

What makes the KVCDx3 template look so darn good is the higher resolution (528x480). So if you take the KVCDx3 template and modify the resolution down to 352x240, you really wouldn't be gaining that much because what you're doing is exactly the same as simply using the KVCD-CQ-352x240-_NTSCFilm_PLUS template with a higher Maximum Bitrate of 2500kbps versus 1800kbps (sure this might help a bit on some high-action scenes, but using a higher resolution would raise quality moreso than raising bitrate). Those are the only 2 differences between the 2 templates you're talking about....the resolution and max-bitrates (aside from the "default" CQ levels of course, which are there only as a guideline and should be changed in conjunction with file-prediction so you get the maximum quality out of the allotted space on your cdr).

If you haven't already, I'd recommend downloading and testing the KVCD Compatibility Test CD Image found in the "What's Happening" Forum and seeing which templates will play properly on your player....then use the template you like best.

Happy encoding, :)

I already have and for some strange reason it doesn't play

What exactly am I suppose to see when I play the compatability cd?

Bud 03-16-2003 04:43 AM

What you should see is a mini menu with 6 options, one for each Template. I have found on some players this may not show up, if not just try to press each "number" with your remote or the keypad on the player example press 1, see if anything plays then press 2, the ones that play will be the ones that will work in your player. I had to do this on a firends Sharp portable player. We found three of the six that would play.

Hope this helps

Bud

In addition to trying what Bud said, the problem might be that you don't have "PlayBack Control" (PBC) enabled on your player. This is what allows you to view vcd 2.0 menu information. Many players have a "PBC" button (or "Menu","Title" or some other name) on their remotes that lets you toggle this functionality on and off (though why anyone would want it off, I don't know). See if your remote has any of these types of keys and also take a look through any onscreen setup menus your player might have. Glancing through your owner's-manual for any of these keywords might also be helpful.

Or it may simply be the case that your player (btw, what kind is it?) doesn't like some of the kvcd templates. For your sake, I hope not! :)

My player is a Legacy LDVD35 (mobile). I tried looking through the menus and it doesn't have such a feature but I did notice that when I insert other vcd discs that it shows on screen that PBC is on.

I tried playing the compatability disc again and pressing 1, 2 ,3 ....on the remote but it still wouldn't play. It just ejects it after a few minutes.

Just curious tho, when burning the disc do you need to finallize/close the disc?

DOH!! :P

From these 2 screen shots, what options do I choose?? And what check boxes do I check??

NONE 8O
You're supposed to use "Burn image..." from Nero's menu :!:

TCC 03-20-2003 03:32 PM

Ok, I ditched trying to burn it w/Nero and did it with the .toc/.bin file with VCDeasy.

Disc works fine on my computer (playing it as a VCD), but when I put it n the mobile player it does not recognize it and displays "No Disc" on the screen. :?: :?:

So confused.

That is a media problem. Try another CD-R brand

That's odd because it playes my recently made KVCD of Shrek (same media as the test disc).

TCC 03-20-2003 05:36 PM

Just went back and decided to try and playing the test cd again and it worked :?: :?:

Seems like my player only likes the 1st three options
4 and 5 have jumpy video and 6 is all pixelie

Darn :!:

Then burn the KVCD Compat. image with Nero, with the "Burn image" option on Nero's menu :!:

I tried that earlier but it gave me those options (the pictures I posted in the posts above) for some reason.

File>burn image> select .nrg file> options box pops up

8O That's weird!, you shouldn't get that popup. Seems your image is corrupted!

Which version of Nero are you using? That is weird.

This doesn't necessarily mean that you can't use those last 3 templates, so don't give up on them yet (I assure you, you'll be glad you didn't if you do a few tweaks and find out they'll work for you!). My player will only play the same 3 clips as yours off the Compatibility Test disc, but I figured out it's because my player doesn't like resolutions higher than 352x240 with a framerate of 23.976fps (for some reason!  )

Heres' what my Compatibility Test results were:
Code:

kvcd-ulbr =PASSED
kvcd-lbr =PASSED
kvcd-352x240 PLUS =PASSED
kvcd-352x480 PLUS =FAILED(skipping audio + video/audio synch issues)
kvcd-704x480 PLUS =FAILED(skipping audio + video/audio synch issues)
kvcdx3 528x480 =FAILED(horribly garbled blocky mess onscreen)

And here's how I got them to work on my player:
Code:

kvcd-352x480 PLUS = change framerate from 23.976 to 29.97fps in template

kvcd-704x480 PLUS = change framerate from 23.976 to 29.97fps in template

kvcdx3 528x480 = change framerate from 23.976 to 29.97fps and also change resolution to 544x480 in template

Do a few short test encodes with these changes to the templates and then see if they'll work properly. If they do, you'll love the quality, even though you can't encode @23.976fps (which would give even better compression and quality). Good luck. :)

I will give that a try D&C.
Where do you change those settings within the template??
What did you use as your "Video arrange method"?

I'm using Nero version OEM 5.0.2.4

Hello again TCC, for starters, that version of Nero is rather outdated, so if there is a free upgrade available to you, it's probably a good idea to download it from Nero's site sometime in the future. There were known SVCD issues with versions of Nero earlier than "5.5.something" (if I remember correctly) which were supposedly fixed in the later versions. But VCDEasy is a much better choice when working with SVCDs. When I burn SVCD's with my up-to-date Nero, I still find that my dvd player doesn't FF/Rewind them correctly, despite whatever "fixes" were done to it. But if I first create a .BIN image of an SVCD with VCDEasy and then burn that .BIN with Nero, the FF/Rewind functions work! So Nero still has some SVCD issues with some dvd players!

Well, you've already successfully followed Black Prince's guide once before on your Shrek encode, right? You'd just follow the same steps again using a small test clip (maybe a trailer or 1 chapter of a movie), and after you get to the step where you click on the "Load" button in TMPG to load in whatever KVCD template you want to use, you would then click on the "Settings" button right next to it. Then, under the "Video" Tab, you would just change the default kvcd "Frame rate" that is shown from 23.976fps to 29.97fps. And in the case of the KVCDx3 Template, you would also change the Size from 528x480 to 544x480 to see if that will help it play on your player.

Everything else, you'd do the same as you did before following the Guides. You'd click on the "Advanced" Tab and set "Source Apsect Ratio" to whatever your source-material's aspect ratio is. And if you're using Sansgrip's GripCrop/Gripsize/Gripborders lines in your Avisynth script, you'd set the "Video Arrange Method" to "Center". If you're using the latest TMPG 2.510, you should also click on the "GOP Structure" Tab and make sure "Detect Scene Change" is Un-checked. There seems to be a bug in the latest version of TMPG that always selects this option.

That's it! Just follow the guides....and good luck. Once again, these changes aren't guaranteed to work with your player, but hopefully they will. As a last resort, you could also try using MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1 with those templates that don't work on your player and see if those will play. But MPEG-1 looks better @ low bitrates less than 2500kbps.
