Compatible Models

The following models play the default KVCD format correctly, without any Audio/Video synchronization problems.

The standard KVCD template resolution is 352x480.
Some DVD players won't play at this resolution, but in most cases, you can change the output resolution to 352x240 and they will play correctly.

Please add your Make/Model to this thread.

Panasonic RP-56
Sony NS300
JVC XV-F80 7 Disc Changer
Panasonic Portable DVD-L10
DMR-E20 DVD-R/DVD-RAM Player/Recorder

Happy Playback!

Eclipse-695 compatible with PAL 352 x 288, uncompatible with 480 x 480

Sanyo 7201 fully compatible (PAL) 352x288 352x576 + standard VCD and SVCD,MP3  - Also have the firmware upgrade for this model to convert it to region free, works with RCE DVD's too. just have to burn the image to CD - So no chipping involved.

Toshiba SD200E OK with VCD but wont play SVCD or Kwag's templates

Finlux DVD 510 / Sony Sony DAV-S300

Finlux DVD 510

I'm sure about 352x240 working, even on a PAL TV.

Not sure yet about 352x480, lots of blocks, but could be my encoding.

Interestingly the Fast Forward worked on 352x240, not on 352x480.

Also tried Sony DAV-S300 with 352x240, works fine. Remember the CD-R problems mentioned on VCDhelp.com though

kwag 04-28-2002 02:06 PM

Apex AD-600A works fine at 352x240 ( or 352x288 )

Just verified that the Apex AD-600A plays fine by just modifying the output resoultion from 352x480 to 352x240 ( or 352x288 if you are using the PAL template ).

Leave all other parameters as they are.

I have had mixed results with the template on my RV31. Sometimes it plays beautifully, other times, the motion will be jerky and the audio plays back at a slower speed...(I tune pianos, so I noticed that the pitch of the music and voices was drastically lower). This only happens on occasion.
When that happens, I can get it to work if I encode the file with all the same settings, but as an MPEG-2 file, and then remux it back into an MPEG-1. Doing that, I can only get about 90 minutes on one disc, with certain source files, that's the only way I can get them to work.

Hi DrChumley !

Try to encode file as MPEG-1 non standard , demux and remux with bbMPEG as SVCD ( top line , two params checked works fine for me ) .
I suggest to try that - I've "Armageddon" ~145min on one disk with CQ67
Kwag's template (more than fine quality).

Play some with top two line params in video multiplex settings .
I hope it'll solve the problem

Standalone DVD/VCD Players

Cyberhome AD-L 528 works fine at 352x288 resolution.

Have not yet tried 352x576

trunksgt72 05-07-2002 01:16 AM

I just tried the Samples at 352 x 480 and at 352 x 240 on an Apex 1200 (NTSC model)... Here it what I found... At 352 x 480 the images are elongated and corrupted displaying only one frame every few seconds... Now at 352 x 240 they played back very well but the quality was Good not great (could just be TMPG as I re-encoded to the lower Resolution using the KVCD Template)... OverAll very Nice Work... Now to see how my Captures look on this... I'll be using this alot... Great Work Guys...

belial96 05-12-2002 06:24 AM

Just to say that it works fine on a Sony DVP-NS305
CQ=70, 320*288 or 320.588 PAL
eg : American History X = 1CD great quality

Samsung DVD-P421 KVCD test results:

Burned "bug" sample, no changes as non-compliant VCD.
Result: Green macro blocks covering 80% of the picture, desynced sound.

Burned "bug" sample, TMPGEnc reencoded to x240, non-compliant VCD.
Result: Normal picture, but frame and sound skips.

Burned "bug" sample, remuxed with BBMpeg to SVCD, burned as SVCD.
Result: Perfect picture, perfect sound. Synchrony!

The final test looked great, and as far as I can tell, is perfect.

BTW, this DVD player is pretty cool. Even random plays MP3 discs! 8O

Hi Cubbs:
At what resolution did it work after re-muxing as SVCD?
352x240 or 352x480?
Or did it work at both?

Cubbs 05-14-2002 03:09 PM

It worked in the KVCD standard 352x480. I didn't bother trying the x240.

Daewoo DVD-5800

Great little unit...I like the sound quality and it gulped up everything I threw at it. DVD, MP3, CD-RW, VCD, SVCD, 74/80/90, CDR, VBR, CQ....except the KVCD at 352 x 480!.....DANG!...Tried every idea I know or have researched, just does not like the 480 in MPEG-1..Although, it works fine at 352 x 240 and NTSC with PAL resolutions  .... SVCD's are truely awesome on this thing, so I tried KVCD'S setting in MPEG 2..Bingo! not a problem, works nicely and the file sizes are close....UPDATED

Memorex MVD2027

Add the Memorex MVD2027 to the list of compatible players. Just tried a KVCD disk and it worked great (352x240, CQ80). Have also played AudioCD, VCD, SVCD, XVCD and MP3 disks without problems.

Snake345 05-17-2002 06:41 PM

Works with the Panasonic DVD-RV26, although at the start of the movies there will be a few seconds of black then the movie will start playing though. Not enough not to use the template though.
