I just E-Mailed the mp3playerstore sales dept., asking them to download one of our samples, to test on their VCD player. As soon as I get a reply, I'll post the answer here. Unless someone owns one of these models and can confirm compatibility here. kwag |
Allright.
I bought myself an Egoman lv 300. A portable device which plays CD, MP3 and VCD. Since the Egoman is an import from "Far East", I've not found any reviews about VCD Authoring experience for the darn thing. (Well I might have, but it could just've been the Tokio Weather Report for all I know...). So I was pretty much on my own. After some sleepless nights, I now finally know what this thing can't do and (more important) what it CAN do. It neither supports the VBR nor the higher resolutions, so you won't be able to use the KVCD templates for your homemade VCDs. But you can still boost up your movies with some tricks, and I have to say I am (nearly) completely satisfied with the results you can get. The only other portable VCD player I read some things about is the NAPA DAV 311, and most reviews blasted that thing to hell or beyond. That's exactly what I would've done with my Egoman if I had been of shorter temper, so it still could do it's work fine. Given one sacrifices enough time to find the proper settings... |
@b00n
Give one more try with the KVCD 352x240 template. The first one on the left in the download page. kwag |
hi kwag 8)
I got some encoding in progress, which will take some while. As soon as that's finished I'll give it a try. It seems that my player has to play back CDs on single speed, which would explain why you can't turn off ESP for MP3s. thanks for sharing your knowledge btw! Everybody who gets the KVCD templates to work on his player should pretty much kiss your *** :D mfG, b00n |
I just gave the KVCD 352x288 (PAL) template another try.
The results: (1) audio plays back perfectly, no problem there. (2) video and audio are in complete synch, no problem there either (theoretically) (3) the pictures are clean and sharp. Problem: While playing back just fine for some scenes, the video freezes every now and then and jumps forward (keeping synch with audio). Before I continue experimenting with the values, I'd like to know if you have already solved similiar problems. My best guess would be a VBV Buffer overflow, but I am not an expert... As you seem to be comprehending German, perhaps you might want to have a look on this page: http://www.edv-tipp.de/dvd/033_vbv_mux.htm It's the most complete VBV discussion I've found so far. And pretty easy to read, if you speak German that is. The results I got with this try are WAY better then my first try with your template quite some time ago, when I gave up on VBR. The only problem is the jumpy playback. As long as it plays, all is just fine! You've given me hope again. (And many a sleepless night I'd wager...) mfG b00n |
:evil:
won't work. I just encoded the Killer Bean 3 teaser video, which has got many text/black screens in it. It plays back like fast forward on my player in these scenes. No good. Anyways I'd advise you to read the article above and analyse your encodings with the MPEGRepair tool from PixelTools. VBV buffer size is not high enough to take this GOP structure. And the muxrate of TMPGEnc might be too low, too. So some problems could be solved by using BBMpeg to multiplex the video at a higher muxrate. I can't advise you enough to read the article. mfG b00n |

Well, as far as the VBV buffer, it's standard value of 40 in the 352x240 template. You may want to try encoding some clips at different VBV values with the 352x240 template. If that fails, then I think the CQ could be the problem. You might want to change the encoding mode from CQ to MVBR and give it one last try. No, I don't read or speak German, so I don't understand those links :cry: kwag |
A pity.
Well anyways I can highly recommend this tool: http://www.pixeltools.com/MpegRepair.html grab a demo version here: ftp://ftp.pixeltools.com/demo/ It's just the type of tool you need to test and analyse your templates! mfG b00n |

So if a player doesn't play an mpeg created with TMPEG and one of it's templates, it won't play with any other encoder available using the same encoding techniques. kwag |
Actually this is related to MPEG encoding in general :P
And there are reasons why a mpeg created with one of your templates (encoding techniques, whatever) will not play on certain players. Be it MPEG1 or MPEG2. And with this tool one can find out why it doesn't work. And find out what *does* work. Or any other good MPEG stream analyzer. As soon as I have some spare time, I will translate some parts of the article for you. Perhaps in the next cycle of the universe :twisted: mfG b00n |
And I might add, that there are differences in the encoding techniques of MPEG encoders. Some quite severe. TMPGEnc gives you absolutely no control over the muxrate for example. BBMpeg does.

I guess we can't have it all in a single tool 8) kwag |
