I did a test encode about 2 min to check if 704x480 resolution worked on my DVD player and it did, then i did a whole movie and it didn't work it gave me a weird picture, i didn't do anything different, what happened.
thanks
Bilal

Hi Bilal,

That sounds strange ! Silly question, but are you positively certain you didn't do anything any differently (like maybe forgetting to check/uncheck 1 little option here or there in TMPG)? Was it a dvd or avi source? (and was it the same source both times, or did you use one source for your test, and another for your full encode?). If you describe your process a bit more, maybe someone can spot the error.

I'd find it very strange that a dvd player would play 1 short clip at a given resolution one minute, and then refuse to player a longer clip with all of the exact same settings/features the next minute . Did you use the exact same kind of media for both of your burns (the test AND the full encode)? Did you burn at the same speed for each? Did you possibly use overburning when you burned your full encode? I'm just trying to think of a few possible reasons why your player might not like the longer disc. Maybe it was just a bad cdr? It might be worth trying to re-burn your kvcd at 8x or slower to another cdr (or a different brand disc, if you've got one).

Good luck,
-d&c

Bilal and d&c

strange was with my new "cineral "player last month.
i burn in cdrw one little mini-dvd for test.
play fantastic on the shop.
when i test in my house....what?...don't play the mini-dvd!
back to shop with the player and the cdrw test.
open lots of cineral players(same model)...no one play it!

then i change to Phillips!

really true,eletronic sometimes makes "crazy"!

Bilal, one simple detail can do a big difference.(media, burn in "slow x"...)
test again!

it was a different source, they were both avi's, i used avisynth2.5 with the test and 2.08 with the movie so it was two different optimal scripts for both version, i thought that was the reason but when i did another test with avisynth2.5 from the same movie source it didn't work either , i then encoded the movie with 544x 480 and it worked, i burnt the 544x480 at same speed as well, i can't remember what speed i used with my initial 704x480 test.

i think i know what's wrong in theory i'll still have to test it, overscan was set to 2 does anyone think this may affect it?

hmm....I'd sorta doubt that any overscan settings you used would lead to your "weird picture" problems because the resultant resolution of your file remains the same, regardless of your overscan setting. (in other words, if your chosen resolution is 704x480 and you use 2-Blocks Overscan, your movie-size does shrink a little bit with larger black borders around it, but in the end you'll still have a 704x480 file when you're done encoding). I think that the worst thing that might happen if you use too high of an overscan-setting would probably be a visible black border on one(or both) sides of your tv screen...but probably not a "weird picture" (btw, what does the picture look like?). Of course, I suppose anything's possible.

Have you tested the KVCD Compatibility Test CD in your player to see which resolutions work for sure? That way you'd know whether it's simply a resolution problem, or something else. I'd also find it somewhat unlikely that your dvd player would handle 544x480 resolution, but not be able to handle 704x480 (since 528/544x480 resolution is a bit more "oddball" than 704x480). Although, I guess it's possible that your player likes 544x480 but chokes on 704x480. What brand/model is your player?...maybe someone else has one and can share their experiences with you.

If I had to guess, I'd bet this is somehow the source of your problems (sorry, but I don't do avi stuff, so I probably won't be of much further help to you). Post your script and maybe someone will see a line you forgot to add or something. Only other thing I can think of would be if maybe you used 48khz audio and your player only supports 44.1khz (though I'm not sure that'd cause a weird picture either...probably just skipping/stuttering).

You might want to consider trying to create a short dvd-->kvcd sample using 704x480 resolution just to see whether 704x480 truly works...there's less variables to worry about when converting from dvd sources, so it might be easier for you that way to figure out what truly does or doesn't work on your player.

Good luck,
-d&c

Hi thanks for your reply, i think something was wrong with the source, i've been encoding using 544x480 i haven't tried 704x480 again, but i'll try it again with a dvd source, my player supports 48 khz too.
thanks anyways i'll give it a few tries

I encoded another movie this time it was a 544x576 at 57 CQ and it did the same thing it gave me two pictures one at 1 fps and the other was pixelated, i think my dvd player can't handle low CQ for higher resolutions, so i can use 544x480/576 at a cq over 65 and 704x480/576 at a cq over 70, that's an assumption but i'll have to do a few tests still. does anyone else have this problem.

So your player is CQ-sensitive at different resolutions?! Don't think I've heard that one before...but who knows!

Here's a 100% Foolproof solution :

Code:
Step 1: unplug/disconnect current dvd player
Step 2: open window (preferably 2nd story or higher)
Step 3: pick up player and walk to open window
Step 4: vigorously throw player out window (shut window afterwards)
Step 5: drive to local electronics store with KVCD Test CD in hand
Step 6: purchase new fully kvcd-compatible dvd player
Step 7: hook up new player and insert KVCD
Step 8: sit back, crack a cold drink, and enjoy your movie!

**Note--Steps 2-4 may be replaced by: 1) selling or giving-away current player, or 2) smashing player with sledgehammer...whichever you'd prefer
But all kidding aside, I hope you can figure out the problem! Your player certainly sounds like a strange little beast (what brand/model is it again?...so I can recommend it to people I don't like ...just kiddin'). Good luck!

thanks
Bilal

ok now i am confused, i tried the following from the same source:
544x576 @55 CQ
going up by 5 cq untill
544x576 @75 CQ
and
704x576 @55 CQ
up to
704x576 @75 CQ
and just one test at 720x576 @ 70 CQ
and only the 720x576 worked but the picture was squeezed a little, the others gave me the same result double pixilated picture, do you think it's the pal or NTSC source that affects it because when it worked before it was 544x480 oh and BTW the movie worked when i did it using 352x288.

Sorry Bilal, but I've only ever worked with NTSC sources, so I really don't know what to tell you regarding PAL issues. Maybe your dvd player and/or tv set has a PAL/NTSC setting that you need to switch to for certain resolutions to display properly I really don't know what else to tell ya friend...I wish I could help more. Maybe someone else will jump in and offer up some better advice. The only other thing I can think of (aside from trying a header-trick, if you haven't already) would be to try encoding using MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1 at those pesky resolutions and then mux as SVCD and see if it helps.

Best of luck,
-d&c

You may also want to try upping the minimum bitrate as some players do not like to go below a value of X.

Cheers,

thanks for your reply guys i've tried a few more tests with a different pal DVD and the 704x576 @60 CQ worked 544x576@60 cq also worked so i guess it depends on the source i am more confused than you are D&C
i also tried an NTSC avi it was a bit pixilated at 704x480 but worked with 544x480, so it's unpredictable to know what's gonna work and what's not thanks anyways guys.
