toolame and lame
 
Q1. I can encode audio with mpeg layer II (aka mp2) with _variable_ bitrate amd mux it with video mpeg 1 or 2.
and then obviously burn it in vcd or svcd format.
Can standalone players handle that?
Q2. If most standalone players are capable of playing mp3 nowdays, why can't mux video mpeg with mp3 and burn it as xvcd. Is it playable?

Some can, but the variable mode of MP2 is far less efficient than MP3 and it is not considered as a good thing to use.

No. But nothing is better than a test on your standalone.
