KVCD issues when played on Philips DVD762?

Just like to thank the webmaster of this site for the working out KVCD format that can be put the whole up to 120min video on 80min CD-R! I'd like to share my success with other people.
Shareware that I used:
TMPGEnc (excellent free MPEG1 encoder and editor)
Nero Burning Rom
I've downloaded the template of PAL KVCD for TMPGEnc and have encoded my 1h32min40sec video with the following settings:
Stream: Video+Audio, VCD non-standard format
Video: MPEG1 with 352x288 25fps @ CQ 60
Audio: MPEG1 layer 2 dual channel 44100 Hz @ 224 kbps
I've got 513MB video. I think I can increase CQ till 66 to get 670mb.
Then I burned my fresh new video with Nero @ 2x speed (of 4x maximum allowed). It is necessary to turn off "Create Standard Compilant CD"!
The result KVCD was played on my Philips DVD762 player without any fail. Only the time displayed was wrong (shorter). It was 51minXXsec instead of the real 92minXXsec. But it is no problem to get every place with FF or REW, or "Time Search" on the player.
My original video was MPEG1 VCD standard already, I haven't seen the difference in quality after getting MPEG1 KVCD with variable bitrate.

I just want to say something to newbies : putting 2h of video in VCD resolution is VERY COMMON !

With these settings I put 2h30 of video with a CQ of 70 at least without any problems. That is not there that the challenge is.
(just use an audio in 128 and not in 224 and set the maximum video bitrate to something between 1300 and 1600 - far enought at this resolution).

The wonderfull in KVCD is that you can put 2h in SVCD resolution !

Welcome Martin,

You really need to use CQMatic/CalcuMatic and you will find the exact CQ to use for your video, which will probably be much higher than 60 :!:

Also do as Phil suggests and drop your audio bitrate to 112 or 128 and you'll get even more CQ :wink:

If your Philips DVD762 can play it, it might be worth upping the resolution to 352x576 or 480x576. This will be a trade off against CQ, but the image will be sharper to start with.

Most of us here like to encode our audio separately from the video using either HeadAC3he or BeSweet, as the audio encoder within TMPEnc is not that good.

Give these things a try and compare the results.

The more you try and "Squeeze" onto a CD the worse the video quality and sound quality. As cheap as CD's are its worth burning at 90 quality with good sound and making 2 CD's. Is this not correct dialhot. I'll have to admit I'm still using acp and getting consistently excellent VCD's with easy setup and not having to spend much time messing with settings, scripts, etc,.

I have converted 105min video using SKVCD template with the following settings:
Video: 352x576, MPEG-2 CQ50 300-2500 kbps
Audio: mp2 @ 128kbps
I've got 950MB video which cannot be put on 80min CD-R. I burned on 99min CD-R using Nero. The results are excellent! The video is played on Philips DVD762 player without any problems!
I have tested CQ40 to get the resul video to fit on 80min CD-R, but the quality was worse.
If anybody can advise the settings for the best quality of SKVCD to fit on 80min CD, it would be great!

Nobody can tell you what CQ to use for a perfect fit, that is something you have to find yourself. :wink:

Take my advice from my previous post and get yourself familiar with CQMatic/CalcuMatic. :)

You can get the latest download and all the advice you need on how to use it here.

For single CD KVCD's though, you should really be encoding to MPEG-1, it's much better equipped to handle the lower bitrates required for the fit. :)
