KVCD: Pioneer DV-545 Solution, could be also for DV-444
 

After a few weeks getting crazy about sound problems and video freeze on my new DVD Piooner DV-545 (very similar to the 444) I have found the problem.

The minimun bitrate should be 600 and the VBV size must be 40.

I have done more that 50 test and with this, no problems at all. With 48, 46 and 44 you get problems.

I'm going to test all the KVCD templates today so you can post the result at the web, but I think a lot of people are asking with problems on the Piooner 444 and this could be the solution.

Sorry but I did a mistake...

The minimun bitrate is 650 and not 600.

Tomorrow I'll test the templates, but all seems to work except the 352x576 ones. They display very narrow on the screen, but I will ensure tomorrow.

I have also tried what you said, but it doesn't work for Dv-545

If the VBV is different from 40 and the minimun is 600 you get noises in the audio, and some times video freeze.

I'm confused:
if bandwidth demand gets above 1400
(roughly) the VBV would probably be to
small at 40, you'd get underflows.
Take a look at the logfiles, I'm mostly shure
there are underflows mentioned.

A better way:
(this was reported b4)
take the TMPGenc prog stream, demux it
and remux it using bbmpeg. I tried this
several times b4, it resulted in a smaller
prog file (*.mpg) than the progfile was
produced by TMPGenc.
Better more: utilize 2LAME encoder for
audio.

Make shure VBR is ticked in bbmpeg!

Maybe this way solves your problems in
a better way: the TMPGenc muxer is known
to produce weak results

I tried also the bbmpeg mux, and i solves the problem is minimun bitrate is 650, and is because vbv value in bbmpeg is 40.. :wink:

I have really tested everything and the only way it works (and it really works without any problem at all) is vbv 40 and min bitrate 650.

I'm now very happy because I'm able to view vcd movies at my DVD with the home cinema, and the double channel sound really works ok with my dobly prologic II amp... :lol:

So many templates to choose from...so many settings to tweak....the thing is it may work in one player and not on the other. So what is the setting those big companies uses for VCD that their cds run virtually in any player? are they using a more sophisticated and expensive encoder or hardware? Is the off-the-shelve software not there yet?

I had a graduation video and i want to distribute this to my son's classmates, but im a bit worried that it may not run in their player and i end up as a help desk or ruin my business reputation :wink: and i dont want to make a copy suited for each and every player.

BTW, I tried your templates and it worked real well.

You can try the 352x240(288) PLUS templates. They are the most compatible of all ( in VCD terms ). That's because the bit rate's MAX is set to 1,150Kbps, just like the standard VCD specifications. You may want to change the audio to 224Kbps, which is also the standard for VCD's.
The basic difference now to a standard VCD is that the bit rate is variable. The Q.matrix and long GOP used in KVCD's shouldn't make that much difference, as far as compatibility issues. But some DVD players don't like VBR MPEG-1, and those will not play any XVCD format, including KVCD's. But give that a try!

maybe there are different DV-545 out on
the market. Take a look at:

It's reported the 545 is NOT designed for
SVCD. This would explain that different
VBV sizes than 40 and VBR below 600
leads to problems (even if VCD/MPEG1).

So it's most likely a problem of the S/A player:
if users report no trouble when playing
SVCDs they probably didn't test
extensive VBR.

I really haven't tested SVCD quite well yet (I'm still trying to understand MPGE-1) :lol: but I have done one SVCD and it worked perfectly.. but with the standar resolution (480x576 for PAL).

Anyway, I think everybody must "test" as we are playing with no standars... if you put the standard values for vcd, I'm sure it will work... but this is not what we want, aren't we?

Well i tried the trick of playing around with the VBV and what not and it doesnt work.. The only thing that does make the 704x480 templates work on the Apex 1500 is goin to mpeg2 with 29.9 or encoding to PAL for an NTSCfilm source..

My tests with the last KVCD 352x576 PLUS template (modified) on my Pionner DV-444 :

with :
VBR 2 pass (i Prefer that for the file size control...)
Min bitrate = 600
Max bitrate = 2200
AVG bitrate = 900-1500 (depend of the lenght of the movie)
VBV Buffer = 40
Audio 64/96 mono, or 128/192 jstereo

...All is perfect :D

Hey TKS,

You can go for mpeg2 with 23.976fps if you set 3:2 pulldown when play back (when your source is FILM or you IVTC it).
Give it a try...
