A coworker has a movie that was sent from his home that is in the PAL format and needs to buy a DVD player to play it. I have tried in my APEX ad1500 and he has a newer DVD that has DVD and VHS tapes I think a Panasonic but both would not play the PAL format DVD. Just need a lead to an inexpensive brand DVD player that will play it.

ITowns,
there may not be a need for a new machine. I watch R2 (U.K & Asia) pal dvd's with my 1500 all the time.
Ya need to check the serial number of your machine first. Certain serial numbers require a modchip upgrade, similar to modding a playstation.
Other models (mine included) required only a firmware patch/update/hack to tweak it to circumvent macrovision and break down the region barriers. So now it plays R1 R2, no mac,,plus the link below has info on changing your wallpaper/screensaver etc....
