I'm trying to convert an anime episode I have to kvcd. I've tried using the various guides on here, but everytime I play the kvcd in my dvd player the image is stretched on screen. This causes the text to be cut off and makes the anime really unwatchable. It plays fine on my pc though..so I'm loss.

The source is 640x480 and I want the best quality possible after I convert. I loaded up the templates and followed the guides (simple and idiot ones), but they're both the same. It doesn't even matter which template I use actually...at least some of the text will always be missing.

So could someone tell me how to convert so that it'll play on my tv (4:3 NTSC)? Do I have to use scripts to get this right since the guides that don't use scripts doesn't seem to be working too well. Maybe its just my dvd player or my tv (HDTV Widescreen, but I can watch stuff in normal mode).

I seriously need help...I've been messing with this stuff for days now and can't get it to play properly on my tv

- Filetype (divx/xvid/mpeg/mjpg - so what says Gspot??) ? : xvid
- interlaced(means combing on fast moving scenes) or not interlaced ? : ??
- Framerate (29.97, 23.976, 25.000) ? : 23.976
- Resolution ? : 640x480
- Audiosamplerate (44.1 khz, 48 khz)? : 48khz
- Audio Type (AC3, mp3, mp2) ?: mp3
- Is Audio VBR or CBR ? vbr
(some answers you get if using Gspot on the source!)

DESTINATION:

- KVCD, K(S)VCD or KDVD ?: kvcd, ksvcd?
- Mode (mpeg1 or mpeg2) ?: mpeg1
- Framerate (29.97, 23.976, 25.000) ? : 29.97
- Resolution ? ??
- Audiosamplerate (44.1 khz or 48 khz) ? : 44.1
- Audio Enc Type (mp2, AC3) ?: mp2
- Encoding Appl. (CCE or TmpgEnc) ?: tmpgenc
- muxing Appl. (TmpgEnc, BBmpeg, etc.) ?: bbmpeg
- Authoring Appl. (Vcdeasy, VCDgear, Nero) ?: none
- Burning Appl. (Vcdeasy, Nero, etc.) ?: nero

29.97 is for NTSC correct? I dont know my target resolution...I want something with about the same quality as my xvid though..528x480? For now I just need something that works and doesn't appear cut off on my tv..thanks for any help.

There is perhaps the problem.
If you can't tell the output resolution that means that you didn't take care of the point. And mays be you are encoding at the same resolution than the source (640*480) and thi sresolution is NOT correct.

Correct resolutions are : 352*240, 352*480, 480*480, 528*480 and 544*480.

You must encode in one of these. Verify in the bottom left line of tmpgenc main window if all is correct (this line display the details ofg you current job : video format / resolution / mode and audio format / bitrate).

I tried those already. The simple and idiots guide uses the kvcd templates with those resolutions and when I watch it on my tv, its cut off.

MPEG-1 528x480 29.97fps CQ 100

I just tried it again and thats what it said at the bottom left of TmpegEnc. When I played it in my dvd player, the image was stretched out, or cut off, both vertically and horizontally since all of the text on the edge of the screen were cut off.

I added borders and it seems fine now...At least I can see all of the text which means nothing is cut off/stretched out.

DO not use CQ=100 as you just lose space with not benefit. CQ=90 is a maximum (BTW you should use CQMatic to find the optimal CQ for your job).

For the other problem : did you use "center" as arrange method in tmpgenc ? Or other thing ?

I tried both center and full screen..but they didn't work. Anyways, I added borders so nothing is chopped off now. I know the CQ 100 isn't a wise choice since I read it about it in other threads. I wasn't really worried about the quality atm, but with the video not fitting properly on my tv. But its all good now so I'll start the real encoding

Here you go:

AviSource("[ANBU-AonE]_Naruto_02_[F40F1F44].avi",false)
AddBorders(16,0,16,0)
ConvertToYV12()
BlindPP(cpu=4)
Blockbuster(method="noise",detail_min=1,detail_max =3,variance=0.1,seed=1)
Convolution3D(1, 6, 12, 6, 8, 2.8, 0)
GripCrop(528, 480, overscan=1, source_anamorphic=false)
GripSize(resizer="LanczosResize")
Undot()
TemporalSoften(2,7,7,3,2)
DCTFilter(1,1,1,1,1,1,0.5,0)
#Blockbuster(method="noise",detail_min=1,detail_ma x=10,variance=0.3,seed=5623)
GripBorders()

Thats v4, and whatever changes I needed to add in order for the script to play in wmp. Don't know if thats the correct way to do it or not, but hey, it looks fine on my tv so I'm not complaining.

In sim you screw up the A/R of the source in order to have a correct one on the target ?

Hum... not really the correct way to fix a problem .

You should try 544*480 insteed of 528*480. Perhaps it's all what you need to do 9and remove the add borders of course).

Or you can also use overscan=2 insteed of 1.

Guess I'll try 544x480 but somehow I doubt that'll fix it. What will overscan=2 do?

It will add a 16 pixels border all arround the movie insteed of a 8 one (with overscan=1)

What should I set the stream video at in TmpegEnc?? 4:3 NTSC? And what about the source video A/R? 1:1 VGA or 4.3 NTSC? I'm not sure about this since gspot/avicodec says the original source is already 4:3, but atm, I set it to 1:1 VGA. Am I suppose to set it at 4:3 NTSC?

1:1 if you use an avi as source.
4:3 is you use an avisynth script.
