Hey all,

I just downloaded this: http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Main...-Products.html

Quoting from their site:

Have fun and stay secure using the new BitDefender!
The new release uses the ICSA Labs certified scanning engines for Microsoft Windows® XP allowing users to enjoy their virus protection as they move to the future's technologies.

Centralized management console
Benefiting from previous experience, the new BitDefender Free Edition was designed with a centralized management console, which allows protection options configuration for all BitDefender modules. It is enough to open the
management console in order to have access to all modules: Virus Scan, Scheduler, Live! Update, Quarantine, Reports.

System scanning
On demand scanning - Powerful scan engines ensure detection and removal of all viruses in the wild every time you need it.

Scheduled scanning
You can schedule the checking of your system at any time, periodically, without any other intervention.

Free Human Technical Support
Provides 24/24 e-mail, chat and phone human technical support.

I'm trying it right now, and so far, it has found 6 viruses on my machine that AVG Anti Virus didn't

I'm not sure you can live with 6 virii on your PC without noticing them.
I suspect more false alerts or harmless things reported as virii by a tool and not by an other.

Note: you should try avast. The best free anti-virii I know (for the moment at least )

I tried avast some time ago, but suddenly after a virus database update, I couldn't open moviestacker without avast telling me it is a virus...
Never used it since...

You see what I call 'false alert' oncerning the report of bitdefender so

For moviestacker you knew easily the antivirus program was wrong. But who know the origin of all the files in his HD, and can be sure that an antivirus is not reporting a false alert ?

Edit: I'll try bitdefender and let you know if it reports new things that my two other antivirii prog (avast + avg) didn't find.

One thing about Bitdefender, it's slow as a turtle
But the final result of the scan was that if found 26 viruses/trojans
Also, the free edition won't scan E-Mails, like AVG does. You have to purchase the standard version to have that.
I'm giving avast a try now

Avast is the only antivir I know that has a module aimed towards p2p tools and one for IM applications (msn...)

But in order to compare to bitdefender I just launched a carefull scan and I see that it can't scan some UPX protected exe. That can be a problem.

You mean avast can't scan UPX, or Bitdefender

Avast. Not all UPX, but some can't be read.

That probably explains why I got so many viruses detected with Bitdefender, because it decompresses many files that AVG doesn't.
Makes the process slower, but I guess I'd settle for a virus free machine, at the cost of more scan time
Now the question is making up my mind between Bitdefender or avast

You always need two antivirii. And as bitdefender free does not have an email scanner, keep avast and use Bitdefender as manual scanner.
(I'm currently doing that with avast and AVG - I did not test bitdefender yet becauseI can't reboot for the moment).

Thanks Phil
That's exactly what I was about to do
I guess that's the perfect combination. If one doesn't catch it, the other will

Then disconnect from the cable/dsl modem at once because you're flooding the internet with 1000's of viruses .
Just kidding you.
I have been in such a position with many customer's PCs full of virii stuff.
I tried everything but no success: mcafee/norton/avg/antivir/trendmicro...you name it.
They're all good finding the tiny little bug but sometimes they seem reluctant to step on it .
I'm affraid that on most occasions I had no other option to format the HDDs.
Cheers

This isn't a theme for me. Only find and delete viruses.

So what's the verdict on this Anti-Virus scanner guys?

So is it o.k then to have 2 anti-virii progs on your pc? I thought they might interfere with one another?

I use AntiVir as recommended by Karl, but on my laptop AVG free as that checks e-mail also.

I might give avast a try as Phil suggested as that also scans e-mails.

Thanks for this useful info guys.

I scanned my "avast protected" pc and bitdefender found a virii in an applet in the java cache. I'm not sure it was a virus, but more probably the applet of an online scanner that I performed some days ago.

BTW, on my win2000 system, a dll from bitdefender crashes at each reboot : xcommserv.dll. Do you have the same problem ?

Hi Phil,

I was running 2000 until yesterday, when I had a disk crash, and had to restore my XP Prof. image
I was getting some strange behaviour when I installed BitDefender on 2000, but I didn't get it on XP.
BTW, XP is now running MUCH faster after I scanned the machine with both antiviruses. It removed about 27 viruses/trojans that were hidden from AVG
So I guess that was the main cause my machine was running slower in the past, when I was on XP.
So now I'm back on XP. Let's see how things run.

it's ok if you have one for a deep scan from times to times and one for real-time protection, as phil suggested.
it's not ok only if both are used for real-time protection.

I don't know how you, guys, are doing ?
I didn't see any single virus since at least 2 years.
nor trojan, spywares, backdoor, rat, hijacker, etc...

I guess you are never on the internet
I didn't have any virii also, but spyware, you can't avoid. A lot of "free" tools deliver some spywares.
