I just recently bought myself a 5.1 surround sound setup(Philips LX-600) and i was wonder what are the difference between a Coaxial cable and an Optical cable, they both carry the full surround sound thru (Or seem to) but i need to buy an Optical cable seperately and i got a Coaxial cable with the unit, i take that to mean theres a difference between the two of them, and ive been wondering what it is, can anyone fill me in please.

AFAIK the other one uses light to carry the 0's and 1's, the other electricity. I'm sure you won't notice any difference between them due to the fact that both carry digital information.

Let say that there are theory and reality.

It's true that they both carry 0 and 1 but this don't prevent against errors (it's like ripping an audio CD, all programm won't give the same result, despite this are all 0 and 1).

In theory, coax is better on long range (more than 1.5 meters) but else optical is better because of less loss of information and better protection against external phenomena.

But in reality you won't have any problem, whatever the format you use, except with some very few decoders.

And I just happened to read from my receiver's (Sony DE-495) manual that it's recommended to use the coax input.
